    #18964793 - 10/11/13 04:36 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Someday I'll be one of the cool people, but until that day...

Habitat:
Conifer forest. Growing from the duffy ground.

Gills: Tubular pores, yellow in color.

Stem: Length, maybe 3 or 4 inches. Light brown with red highlights.

Cap: Red and brown with apparent cracks.

Spore print color: Waiting, waiting.

Bruising: Forgot to bruise the underside.

It's a little drab, though that may just be the lighting conditions, but I think it may be an aged Boletus chrysenteron.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

or maybe truncatus.  them pores look mighty big.

blueing would help narrow it down as well, but you knew that

Old and half dried out, blueing can be be a little trickier.

Between B. chrysenteron and B. truncatus I'm disposed to lump, unless I see some work on the later with which I can better judge.

many boletes baffle me because of the cosmetic differences within species.  for now, if it blues or isn't yellow pored i just walk on by.

I don't know the genus well, and I am not learning it fast enough even to keep up with the changes, but I can generally tell what to put on the table, and I know a few species well.

I'm just the type who can't often be satisfied not to know. Even if it takes me forever.

Sorry for the pics, we were losing light rapidly and still needed to visit a C. olvieri stand as well as the coccoras I posted yesterday, so I was in a hurry.

Thanks for the info, I'll read a bit more about the chrysenteron but this is the closest I've seen so far upon first impression.

I know I should have scratched the gills and got a reaction but I was far too excited for the coccoras and shaggy parasols to give this bolete its proper consideration.

Looks like Boletus chrysenteron to me as well.
