Why is marijuana dried in the dark?

Just wonder why this is? Is it to signal to the plant something in the absence of light or just to save money on the electric bill? Does light lower the alkaloid content?

I thought it had something to do with chlorophyll breakdown and smoothness of taste.. I could be wrong.

I don't think most people dry marijuana in the dark...

I've never heard anything about drying in the dark but maybe you could test it. I know you won't know exact thc/CBd content but maybe you'll get a few differences. Sorry to ask but when should I harvest? The hairs started to turn amber so I thought it was time but new ones are starting to grow so what should I do? They're outside and it's getting to drop to low 40's at night.

Light degrades thc. Look at trichomes under magnification to decide when to harvest.
Edit: some terpines are very volatile and will burn off as low as like 70 or 80 degrees

You need to decide when to harvest, bat not till the trichomes become milky.
If you harvest when they are transparent, you loose potency, when they become milky most of them is good to harvest, if your goal is high THC with minimum CBD. When they are most of them milky and some amber is the optimum (at least for me), because you have all the potency you may have with a bit CBD. If you let them become most of them amber you have big amount of CBD, nice stony high!
So it depends on your taste mate, bat remember, dont harvest when the trichomes are transparent..

I wanted to view them under a microscope my buddy has one and it's very cool but radioshack doesn't carry them like their website said they did, for radioshack. But thanks for the tips I think I'll be harvesting very soon

It stops photosynthesis forcing the plant to use up it's sugars until it fully dies, then it slows the cure and allows bacteria and yeast to break down the starches and some of the chlorophyll. It also protects the THC from breaking down. Interestingly enough, the harshness in fast dried bud is due to the burning sugars rather than the magnesium from the chlorophyll as commonly thought. Most of the magnesium remains in the ashes after the bud is smoked.
If you harvest too soon with clear trichomes you will get mostly THC at a low potency that gives a paranoid and harsh high if any. If you harvest with milky trichomes you get the peak amount of THC giving a trippy high, and if you wait till they get amber you get a nice body stone from some of the THC degrading to CBN which helps the CBD have a stronger effect.
