Does bruising weaken, potentiate, or do nothing?
    #18961022 - 10/10/13 07:13 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

The first I read of bruising is that it was the "insecticide" of the fruit body, or otherwise a defense mechanism, so I thought wouldn't bruising it while it's growing make it produce more psilocybin? After looking into that I read a post claiming the bruising is simply an indicator that some psilocybin/psilocin has converted into "a compound related to isatin & indigo." But if that is true wouldn't that mean bruising it uses up the psilocybin thus weakening the mushrooms potency?

No....bruising has absolutely nothing to do with the level of potency of said fruit.

I believe (but could be wrong) that bluing is a result of the oxidation of psilocybin.  If I am right about this it would mean that it is weakening the mushrooms.

It's oxidation of psilocin which mostly degrades during the drying process anyway.
At least that's my understanding.

Got some conflicting answers. I would think if some bruising does weaken it, the amount would be negligible anyway, right? So the best bet is to gently pick right off the cake and eat immediately. I wish there was a good way to preserve them fresh.

No one knows why they bruise blue but people have their theories. No scientist has identified the chemicals responsible. People have reported to have isolate strains of cubes that do not bruise blue at all and will still light you up into space.

LeopardMan said:
What we know for sure is that psilocin is directly related to the blueing process.

That has nothing to do with potency though, cause there are many alkaloids which could cause the mushroom to stain blue and psilocin is just one of them.

Truth is we still don't know what exactly causes bruising in cubes

This is the best (and most recent) response I've seen to the bruising argument. I'm inclined to believe LeopardMan, he's been doing this for a long time
