Interesting analogy to this idea I just noticed in the book I'm reading. The book is "Imagine - How Creativity Works" by Lehrer. The section I'm currently in describes the importance of cities in creativity, as essential "idea multipliers." However, not all cities posess the same amount of this quality. Some cities have creative roadblocks, whether too much segregation or poorly designed transportation systems,, etc, that obstruct the exchange of ideas & the citizens' potential.
I see egos as a micro-parallel. It can be hugely beneficial when cultivated with wisdom & a sense of play.

What would you say about my behavioral patterns?
I really don't have much to say about them to be honest, as I really don't judge them. (The only ones noticeable through this medium that is.)
But, I'd say your behavioral patterns on this forum have a strong impact on others thought processes, as it seems you more oft than not challenge others bullshit where you perceive it.
I get the feeling that you're often drawn back to this forum because, like myself, it is one of the few mediums in which the ugly wisdom you have found 'makes a difference', one of the few niches where those aspects of ourselves can be exercised.

After lurking like crazy for the past week this thread has convinced me to register, so allow me to introduce myself. I'm a Psychology undergrad and you can call me Phantom. Please try to be aware of my sarcasm and criticize me when you can and I'll leave it at that. See you around

It was a joke made half seriously. You haven't defeated any arguments except in your own mind. You reply selectively and ignore information you cannot refute. Not worth the correspondence. You're like a broken record dude.
See you on the other side.
Seems to me that this is almost always the way debate goes here. Close to 100% of the time imo. I haven't seen anyone who doesn't use this tactic in debate. This is why imo most debate is seriously flawed and unlikely get far. In fact maybe it's the lurkers who are the ones who can really benefit from what is said here because they can evaluate the information without as much ego interference.
Do you really believe it's because of "ego trips" that the debate plays out like this? If it's because of an ego trip, then it's pretty sorry one isn't it? I mean ego trips can be pretty great... I don't think I am disagreeing with you, but trying to understand what you mean.

Clinging to an indefensible position is the matter of ego, and from my observation more common than not on these boards.

If you mean a person who keeps clinging to a position that he/she realizes (at some point in the debate at least) is wrong, but just won't admit "defeat" then I agree. I just ascribed these things more to ignorance rather than knowingly keeping up some false position. But I guess you might be right! A shame if it is so.

There's a middle ground which I think is the common scenario, the ego gets in the way of the individual admitting to themselves that they are wrong. I'm sure its less common for someone to actually realize that 2+2 doesn't equal 86 and cling to the equation anyways Personally I admit when my views change on a subject, sticking to one's guns would mean I'd be as intelligent or educated as I was at 15
