hey guys, just want to make sure i have the right stuff. i know nothing about silicone, so before i go making a bunch of lids, i want to clarify that this is what i need!

im assuming it has to be, but i saw a few different versions in the store so i figure its better to be safe and ask the professionals

That will probably work but I believe what you want is silicone that you buy in the auto store for engines that will resist heat. Just make a test jar and see if it holds up under the heat. If it does then its fine.

Silicone is safe up to like 200*C, you're fine with what you have as long as it is 100% silicone. You can get the red automotive stuff if you want, but it isn't necessary.

hmm, alright. well ill probably do what sisay originally said then, and run a test jar to see if it comes out okay. but silicone is pretty cheap anyway, so i dont mind getting the good stuff rather than take any chances!

Silicone is silicone. Just because somebody replies to your thread first doesn't mean they're right.

I don't see why you can't already use what you have. Mush is correct, that silicone is silicon. But if your going to the store to get RTV, get the red stuff.

just wanted to run a tester to be certain after hearing different things, and like you guys said, it worked just fine!
i made my lids with two holes, one with silicone, one with polyfill.
with this combination, is it necessary to have a tyvek layer under the lids?
i assume itll still be helpful, but i just want to make sure its still viable. for instance, when i shake the jars, i dont want the polyfill getting wet, and in my experience so far, the tyvek helps with that as well. also acts as an extra layer of protection from contams. but i just want to make sure its not interfering with gas exchange at all!
thanks for the info guys!

100% silicone works. They put additives in it which should make it less than 100% silicone but they're referring to the caulking itself. When a contractor buys caulking they want to know if it's polyurethane or silicone or acrylic etc... 100% kitchen silicone will have mildew resistance additives and RTV will have things to help it with heat and pigments etc.. Even the kitchen stuff will hold up to repeated PC use. I know because all I ever use is 100% silicone the kitchen kind because it's the cheapest option at the local hardware store.

I use polyfill for my grain jars with no problem. You just want it stuffed really really tight in a 1/4-3/8" hole. I trim mine up but it's fluffy enough that if some of the ends inside of the jar get wet I don't think it's a big deal. But if you're doing polyfill you don't need additional tyvek.

yeah i know you dont NEED the tyvek, but i want to be as careful as possible i guess lol
and id like to use it since ive got it, but if its going to be detrimental then thats a different story.
so my main question is whether or not it will hurt gas exchange in my jars and keep them from colonizing as quick as they should?!
if not, i see no reason not to include it as an extra precaution you know?

I don't think it would hurt but I think you might be the first one to bother with it. Let us know what happens.

The Tyvek won't do much for you. The tyvek will get punctured when you inject your grain so it will no longer be any good for a filter.
