Blind or deaf?
    #18962737 - 10/11/13 06:37 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Imagine you're rushed to hospital in a severely life threatening state and the only way for you to save your life is for them preform critical surgery, which you agree to. The procedure begins and everything is going fine....Until they hit a stumbling block; they can either preserve your vision at the cost of your hearing, or vice versa..

They wake you up from anesthesia and pose the question to you; "We can save your life, but at a cost; we must either cut this way, which will save your vision, but cost your hearing, or we can cut another way which will save you your hearing at the cost of your vision, if you do not decide you will die"... What is your response? Which do you save? How do you justify your choice to yourself?

I highly doubt (and hope) this situation would ever actually arise, but I'm curious as to which sense you value more and how you would justify the destruction of one to save another.

Which do you save?
What's your choice?
You may choose only one

I chose hearing.

My entire life, ive had crappy hearing already, so when it comes down to it, Im used to it but I would think being blind would be really rough.

So wait, the poll is which one we would keep or which one we would get rid of?  I voted i would keep my vision.  Music and DJing are important, but I think there is no question that it far outweighs losing your vision. There is always art, graphic design and lasers!  Fuck, even deaf people are DJing now!

I'm torn between the 2 thoughts.. A life without music, art and being able to freely communicate with anyone seems difficult.

It seems to me that being deaf would impair communication more than being blind. I'm leaning towards saving my hearing. I'll elaborate shortly :yesnod:.

I'd save my vision, pretty easy choice IMO. Being blind would increase your risk of accidental death and limit your independence dramatically. Being deaf would be shitty too, but not nearly as bad.

I wouldn't mind not being able to hear everyones bull shit.

If you are blind, you wouldn't be able to use the Internet.

Loosing the internet is a great point.  That pretty much seals the deal.  I guess if you lost your vision you would only see inner beauty. :naughty:

And becoming deaf after 20-30 years, I think it'd be easier to deal with than if you were young. I am assuming that it wouldn't be too hard to talk still? You'd probably he screaming the words, haha, but atleast you could still yell things like "stop! " and "RAPE!"

Yeah there would still be plenty of options for communication if you were deaf. You'd already know how to speak, and you could learn to read lips. Inability to hear music would be a big downside though.

Blind people can use the internet though, they can use text to speech programs to read everything out to them for example. Or there's this:

i'd choose my hearing.  I like to talk with people and hear things.  except for reading i don't really give a shit about seeing stuff.
It would be fun to be on welfare and just like, take a long time to go to the grocery store and stuff.  I'd get books in braille and shit.

I wouldn't care at all about music, honestly.

And I don't mind reading subtitles.

Those programs for the blind are great and all...but it wouldn't he the same.

I picked hearing, it would suck, butbeing blind would suck more.

No driving, no internet, no independence, no thanks.

I am already ~80% blind in one eye and it sucks.

I'm also pretty deaf from guns and fireworks, but that's not as bad.

Losing music would probably be one of the worse things, and the fact that I would drive myself mad with my thoughts.

Would you still be able to have CEVs if you're blind?

And can't they fix hearing?

If there was nothing they would do I would get myself some stem cells and spend a lot of time figuring out how to fix myself.

If that didn't work honestly either one would most likely lead to my suicide shortly there after.

Unclear poll.  Do we vote for what we lose or save?

That said I would choose for saving my vision.

Losing my hearing would suck bigtime but I would stay independent.  Losing my vision, I cant even imagine going through life with a stick and a seeing eye dog.

I have thought about this be for its scary :paranoid:
met some one that became deaf she could speak normal before but now
she speaks jiberish don't know if it happens for every one most people will start to sound different and wont be able to pronounce a lot of words
sign languid would suck having to resort to it all the time and very few people know how to do it
would probably save my vision but I don't know what I would do if I couldn't hear sounds they are so trippy :trippinbawelz:

I would have a hard time too that shit is tough

People who can see get killed crossing the street with reasonable regularity, being blind would put you at that much more risk. Enough drivers are idiots that you can be doing everything you're supposed to and still get killed.

I would choose ti save my hearing without a 2nd thought.  But ive always remembers everything I hear and don't always recognize people until they speak so j feel I'm already a little stilted toward audio regardless.  Being blind might make me develop supersonic hearing like that one little black kid

Still get hit by a car though, as we all know its blind peoples only weakness

I have a friend who is blind (from birth). He is probably one of the most incredible and diverse musicians I know and is generally and all round decent guy. He gets baked with us, trips with us (for him its a more sensual and auditory experience although the 'feeling' behind the 'fireworks' is still there), he comes to the pub with us. Hell we're even going to a show later on tonight...

I feel he is one of the few people who actually listens to what people say as he doesn't have the aesthetic side of things to distract him from the point of the message.

Although, in terms of everyday shit like moving around, eating etc, being blind appears to be much more hassle than being deaf...

That's a hard one, but I think I'd save my vision....

Being deaf, I could still feel music in a tactile/physical sense from vibrations, so I'd still be able to dance. Though I would miss majority of the spectrum of a song.

Most of the world I'm around as it is has far too much abrasive sound anyways, I like to wear ear plugs to drown out sounds during the day because they're so damn overwhelming. So there's a lot of sounds I could easily do with out through my average day to day.

I would really miss the more subtle sounds of nature...like the sound of flowing water, birds, thunder (I can feel it somewhat), the sounds of wind, coyotes howling, the female voice, etc.

Though, I think being deaf or blind will not be much of an issue at all in the coming years....that technology stuff, ya know.

Nah, I just like to dance & move around . Funny you say that though, because I've been saying "I just wanna dance" lately to my friends, in a humorous yet serious sorta way.

I used to be all sorts of rigid and I felt the epitome of awkward when attempting to dance, thinking back to high school prom still makes me cringe  ....

....now, I'll sometimes catch my self dancing & moving around a bit even if there's no music playing  . It feels way too good, throw some kratom, or LSD, and/or mdma into the mix and  :mindblown:  :prettyflyforawhiteguy:  .

MDMA and giving no shits made me fall in love with moving my body about.

Hmm. I would save my vision. I like to be independent and I feel that without vision it would severely limit that. I wouldn't be able to drive, go for a walk, go for a swim, etc...

I mean it would be hard to live without hearing people and music and small things like hearing water... or the wind. Its things people take for granted that you'll miss so much once it is gone.

In todays age you could just carry an ipad around and type out what you want to say and have them type out if they want to talk to you.

I don't know about learning sign language...seems difficult

I mean if I was to lose one or the other, and I was to make the decision outside of dying.  I don't want to lose music, and I don't want to lose being able to see everything I love.  Everyday until you die you would morn either or, I would just rather find out what we are all afraid to see early than live in misery.  The thought of never being able to listen to music anymore makes it an easy choice.

dude, i am fanatic of music, i would die if i had to could out music. but you don't... just get a Cochlear implant. granted, you might not have the same ear for music, you once had, but you'd still be able to appreciate it, and hear quite a bit of it, actually. just certainly some frequencies would be cut out, but not enough so that you go tone deaf.

but then your sight, brah... now i wouldn't be able to live without that either... seriously, i'd fucking bash my head in, unless you know, i dealt with fucking blow.

IF THAT, i'd be sure to be stuck roaming every where for my life, never fully knowing what's going on around me. that's not actually too bad, but still, my reality would be shaken to the very core. i like my knowing things. i like knowing things first and foremost right away without needing to lean on any of my senses. aside from the more important one... sight. the thing which allows you to SEE reality.

that... is some shit that i'd give up the my hearing for... and again, Cochlear implant saves the day, in this hypothetical situation.

Then you are in the same boat as me, the question isn't considering technicalities!  I love music too much to lose my hearing and I love everything I can see too much to lose my sight.  Everyone has to die, most people don't have to lose their sight or hearing.

dude, you're missing the puzzle piece! technologically rewire your brain (metaphorically speaking) to hear again! it's easy. my mom did it, and she can hear music again. she can't make out lyrics as easy as most people, because YES, your hearing isn't exactly COMPLETELY INTACT, but... you can still hear music...

you'd rather die, then even consider this?

the force is... Strange with this one.

Being blind would be a kinda cool challenge, I'm already working on walking around with my eyes closed using the sound of the ambient reflections against the walls to detect the shape of room/nearby surfaces.. when I'm bored at work :lolsy:... I feel like I'd probably make much quicker and more extreme progress if I were actually blind.
