Anyone find any morels in Tasmania? Are they a spring fruit? Ideas of habitat?

Yes, there are morels in Tasmania in spring. Googling the title of this thread brings up lots of interesting stuff.

Yes, morels can be found in Tasmania but are rare (or at least uncommon).

Hi Octopus,
I've been hunting Morels in southern Tassie for almost 15 years. Suffice it to say that I haven't ever done particularly well. They pop up occasionally here and there, but I've never seen regular patches like I used to hunt every spring overseas. HOWEVER, there was someone supplying commercial quantities of wild-picked morels to restaurants such as Schouten House in Swansea in the late 90s. There are rumours that recently burnt tea-tree scrub in sandy soil is the habitat they came from. Take that with a grain of salt, but it's a start. I've also seen a friend pick a box-full on the mountain near Hobart, but I've never been able to replicate this.
Good luck!

Thanks Tas, very helpful, even if to only know my hunt will not be in vain, tea tree ay? sandy soil ay? check and check. I've also heard blue gum plantations, but as you say take it with a grain of salt, they're also quite disguised little buggers, always remind me of the lungs of an old smoker (maybe mine, although I'm not that old)
Best get my boots and swag and go for a hunt.
Cheers.

Just as well as these are 99.9% of the trees down here, to be honest I'm sick of looking at gum and wattle, gimme some spruce any day

Hi Octopus,
I tend to target saffron milk-caps (Lactarius deliciosus), slippery jacks (Suillus luteus and S. granulatus)and chantarelles (Cantharellus spp.), but I'll eat any edibles that I can make a positive ID on. I've eaten quite a lot of Agaricus, Marasmius oreades and Lepista nuda over the years.
I know where a ton of false morels grow near Hobart, but I'm too wary of gyromitrins to eat them.
If you want to talk about them some more you can PM me.
