Living out of a homeless shelter

I'm thinking about becoming independent and making a quick move to a different state and taking advantage of a homeless shelter or similar thing. My reasoning is why burden myself with rent money when I can live somewhere for free? I did this briefly once and it was a nice place, so I see no reason why I shouldn't do it again. It's just a matter of scouting out suitable places. I saw this documentary where homeless alcoholics were given private, spacious rooms in a modern building. And they were even allowed to drink! I hope I can find something. Things like my possessions getting stolen wouldn't be an issue because I would simply rent a storage unit. Much less of a burden than rent money. I'm also considering doing a farm thing, where you get to stay on the farm. Any advice would be appreciated.

It's not as cut-and-dry as that. And I would actively explore the possibility of buying a tent and camping out at night. But I'd need some time to get to know the area.

I don't recommend it, them some grimy ass places and often enough you won't be able to stay for more than a night. I'd much rather hobo out in the city with just a sleeping bag and that's something I'd not want to do.
When I was a kid urban camping was an adventure but now just thinking of it makes me feel tired, its not for everyone. Patience would be better in my opinion. Do you have a car you can sleep out of? Much better deal right there in my opinion

The car thing is a future possibility. What's wrong with camping out at night?

In the city camping is just rough, hard to find a good place, likely wake up after a few hours to cops or violent hooligans. What I remember most is walking a lot to find a good place. Then there are the things I don't remember if I ever had to deal with, rain / snow.
Camping out in the woods is cool but without a car you're basically stuck without a job. For me its boiled down to having to get a vehicle or a house

Actually, the idea that everyone should work is silly. Work is only needed when it's needed. I imagine the majority of people in this world don't have jobs and simply live off of other people, both below working age and over. This will increase with overpopulation. Not to mention the fact that money only has imagined value.

Funny, we could apply the same logic to your life, that its value is only self imposed. I dont imagine you would readily agree with that however.

theres a few spots here in texas that would allow for a perfect tent set up. could even construct a tree house like base and set up a tent on the platform. a simple tarp with some creativity could would make for some great camo. you would be off the ground and have some natural instillation. find yourself a light weight bike and a job and you will be set. free rent and a chill spot to... well, chill.
you will have to always worry about people finding your spot while youre at work, but if youre smart and you choose the right spot, you should be alright.

Would rather live in a van down by the river than in the suburbs or city, will buy some land to park on when my finances tie off a little. To each their own, I'll never get the appeal in spending a lot of money to live in a suburb or city

Thank you, rev0kadavur. I already knew about that. Also: http://www.helpx.net
Yeah, the tree house is an intriguing idea. And me and you have the same mentality I'm just not handy like that. Do you know of any books that would give a person the guidance needed to set up something like that? Also, did you say that the area is generally safe?

book? whats... book?
nah, i dont know of any books, but a couple hours online should give you the right idea.
there are plenty of spots in texas that have 1000s of acres of wooded areas. just gotta find out what kinda area it is. private, vacant, open to the public. you also have to factor in the commute to and from work. i make it sound and look easy, but for someone who isnt familiar with the area will have a hard time.
i would suggest heading south of texas and looking for a job first. a lot of big farms are always looking for help... where theres big farms you will find lots of fucking land. theres even the possibility of working up an agreement with the boss as far as squatting on the land as long as you promise to stay quite and clean up after yourself.
another thing to consider is food and water. water shouldbt be too bad, but the food might be a problem. look into drying meats, jerky. if youre looking at long term you could even start a small garden.
honestly, its all about location.

Most places don't. Allow you to stay more then a set amount of days in there state parks.
They also cost money. But feel free to go roam Texas . Might get yourself shot when crash on someone's land or bite by a snake in the grass . You will most likely end up in Austin giving h-jobs for smack.

Save up and get a vehicle that is suitable for camping out in. Even a station wagon or pickup truck with a camper shell is pretty comfy as long as you aren't going to a cold ass area.

yea i also chose a car over a place also when i slept in a tent in northern cali for about 6 months, had a car and job but couldnt afford an apt and fuck it the woods were nice i watched the sunset over the ocean like ten minutes from where i slept almost every night. i also met alot of people like me that were mostly cool and had a great time being homeless seriously the best!!! if u call it that homeless i mean a tent and car are not that bad if its not cold but homeless shelters suck dont go there unless you have to they suck however there are lots of free breakfasts and dinners at those places you can get and not sleep there. but do get a car first tits safer than a tent and sometimes you can always have a place to sleep you get real used to it fast . no one wants to be homeless really beleive me there are some complications like showers and cooking i made freinds with people who had houses but if you dont know anyone you have to make freinds fast wich isnt hard if you got shit to do anyway you will learn good luck spangeing

Just move to Hawaii. Warm weather, you could fish and hunt for food, depending on the island, and you could shower at the beaches.
