Writing a 'project proposal' for a peace corp mushroom grow
    #18961202 - 10/10/13 07:53 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

I dunno, its just an idea right now. It has been a long standing dream of mine to one day join the peace corp. And now that I can grow edible mushrooms, that seems like it might be a prime skill to take to the peace corp.

But what I'm really asking here is do you think it's a feasible thing to do in a poor ass area? Like, would I be able to be sterile enough still? Could I pressure cook over a fire? And what of a flowhood, I guess I could bring a generator?

I want to gather a few ideas from you guys  and then write up a little project proposal for how this project would be run. In case they don't do anything like this, maybe it could be a fruitful project for certain areas.

I mean, it turns waste into food! :yesnod:

you should check out what is called mycoremediation.  fungus was used to help clean up the san francisco oil spill.  fungus, used along with other plants can help clean up oil spills and other toxic contamination.  This could be useful in areas such as say, the Niger delta, where oil spills are common due to lax regulation and oil piracy.  Though, that place is very dangerous, oil spills are common is developing countries.

Yeah, i think they were using oysters.  from what i remember they were edible in the end. to what extent they bioaccumulate toxins, I dont know.  Thats for you to find out :-)

but they are developing something new that is specialized for decomposing petroleum.  haven't looked into it in a while...

He has another project in the works to use oysters (pretty sure) to help absorb and digest the radiation at a faster rate than it would naturally.

These ones will NOT be edible they say though

This is not meant to be a rain storm on your parade, but I want you to understand what it is like "out here."

I am currently in a country that is in the news constantly because of armed conflict and instability.  Previously, I was in Afghanistan for three and a half years as a civilian contractor working for NGOs.  I lived on the local economy which is awesome in some respects (make great friends, bought a chunk of Afghan hash the size of my fist for the equivalent of two dollars, ate the best fruit I have ever eaten in my life while looking at mountains that surpass the European Alps in their beauty) but like all things in life, there is a trade off.

Trying to do some of the most basic things with even basic technology is hard in places like this.  Implementing a process that requires even a modicum of quality is a challenge that I cannot even begin to describe.

In a nutshell, doing what you are proposing will be much, much harder than you can ever contemplate.

I meet people all the time who come to places like this with the best of intentions and motivated to endure and overcome adversity, and within a year they are beaten down, demoralized, and on a plane home.

I am not saying that you should not try and do this, but I am trying to be realistic with you.  Please believe me, I try and be a humble person but I really do know what I am talking about here.

Good luck.

That is a fantastic idea. I wanted to join the peach corps until I found out that 90% of their volunteers have a bachelors degree or beyond. I'm not going to put myself through that much school just to volunteer.

I haven't checked tour dates. But I doubt they are coming to my city.  Seattle is probably the closest they will get.  It's that way with most big bands here
