crushed oyster shell in cacti soil?

I dunno, I saw it mentioned today when researching lithops (my favorite kind of cacti atm)
Would this really do anything good for the soil mix to add a little in? anyone tried it? I know its a ph buffer in mushroom cultivation, so does it serve the same purpose here?

They sell it on ebay for cacti soil mix so I would assumd you can you use it for such purposes. I, personally, havent used it but I wouldn't mind giving it a go.

hmm, well oyster shell makes it more alkaline right? Because it goes with lime, which also does that, I think.
So I guess in the future I'll read which species prefer more alkaline soil and put it in those ones only

Lithops are not cacti.
It's used as a pH buffer for soil, also for its calcium content and its ability to enhance soil structure over time. It's basically a slow release organic fertilser. Also promotes drainage.

Oyster shell may be an excellent pH buffer, but it will keep the pH of your mix on the alkaline side. I wouldn't do that for Lithops (you mentioned them), since they mostly come from acidic soils. As for Lophophora, Ariocarpus, etc., I use limestone chippings on my mixes. They degrade a lot slower than oyster shells and I don't like to repot too often (a way of saying "I'm lazy when it comes to repotting"). I've read somewhere of an experiment on growing Turbinicarpus hybrids on dolomite, it may be worth looking for it.
