Healing Bacterial Contam with Alcohol?
    #18960008 - 10/10/13 03:32 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

My jars are all infected with some sort of wet spot bacteria, but other than that are all clean. The mycelium are colonizing pretty well except in about quarter to half dollar sized patches directly underneath my inoculation points where the bacterial colonies have taken hold.

My question that I've been trying to find the answer to is whether or not I can use alcohol or another disinfectant to eliminate the bacterial colonies, allow the alcohol to evaporate off, then wait for the myc to colonize the area?  I know the disinfectant will also kill the myc surrounding the area, but will the disinfectant be transported across the entire network of mycelium, or will it only kill the myc locally?

Any advice or instruction on this would be very much appreciated.  I'm trying to get fruits ready by Christmas and I'd rather not throw my cakes out and start over.

No, and not just from the effect it would have on mushroom mycelium. Alcohol will not kill the type of bacteria that are likely growing there.

If you want to try to salvage it though you could bury the contents outside. Sometimes they'll recover and you'll find some mushrooms growing nearby.
