My ice chest incubator

I remember reading this book on growing Psilocybe cubensis, and it showed how to make a incubator out of an ice chest, and a reptile heating mat. I'm missing the thermometer though I often check on them and make sure the jars aren't getting warm
Anyone else out there use this or something similar? I'm just starting to use this incubator today, it's getting colder each day where I live.

If your house is going below ~62F then sure use an incubator otherwise it's probably unnecessary. Also there's no gas exchange on your jars, and there's tin foil under the band? I don't think that's going to turn out well for you.

About 70F is the lowest it gets inside the house. So it's not needed unless it's below 62F? Wow sweet thank you. I feel silly but oh well, it does get about 63F inside the house in the middle of winter so I will wait till then.
As for gas exchange...Hmm no the lids are just sealed no little filtered holes or anything...hmm.. that's why rye bags come with a filter patch. Makes sense..cool Thanks again, I need to look into gas exchange for my PF jars.

Watch the PF tek. Those jars are never going to colonize to 100% if they're sealed up they will stall out. If your house is 70F then you're golden. Most incubator information is very outdated.

hah no prob.
There's also a good PF tek thread http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/15223324#15223324
out of curiosity how did you inoculate those jars?

Ohes very cool, thanks for the link
Well, I inoculated them with a syringe, they are PF cakes, and the spores were very fresh from this year 2013. The jars are Panaeolus cyanescens and the rest are Cubensis. I hope that answered your question, if not let me know
That makes sense because I have some Pan cyan jars in the same photo and they are at 15 days since syringe, and they are only at like 20% colonization. It's probably because the jars aren't getting Gas exchange, I initially thought it was because of the cool 70 degree weather...hmm

An incubator is not needed if your temps are 70F, but a properly made incubator can speed up colonization times tremendously.
It's getting close to time for me to dig out the one I made from rigid insulation and reptile heat cable.

I mean how did you get the spores into the jars? Did you open them up after sterilization and squirt the syringe in? I've never done Pan cyans but I think you have to alter the PF tek recipe and/or fruiting operation to make them fruit properly.

@bodhisatta, I sterilized them without a Pressure cooker, and then inoculated the jar with a spore syringe through a foil lid beneath the canning jar's lid I let the jars cool down for 5-6 hours of course beforehand.

Sweet I learned something today, Cubensis don't actually hate the cooler temperatures like I always thought. The jars are cold to the touch and when I put my face against the glass it feels very cold/chilly

Ok cool. I was hoping you didn't just open the jars and squirt the syringe in because then they would most likely contaminate. Your procedure will work though. It's unfortunate there's nothing much you can do to give them gas exchange, but you could try to take the lids off and just leave the foil on the jars with some holes in that if they do stall.
If I were going to build an incubator it would only be to make my jars 75. They do grow faster at 82F I believe is optimum but as the temp goes up so does germinate rates of bacteria. Sterilization is never complete(steam or PC) it just gives a window for the myc to grow. This is why people get bacterial infections in sterilized jars that are prepared too wet.
