Polyfill or Tyvek or even Ez Felt. Try a store  Tyvek is free at a post office if you take some tyvek mailers.

I think the op is talking about sfd's. Many of our sponsors carry synthetic filter disks I believe.

Ive never used sfd's, but Ive reused the same homemade EZ Felt discs 6 times now with no contams. You can find it at just about any arts and crafts store, or order it from hobbylobby.com...I picked up more than I'll ever need for around $5 shipped.

i might try ez felt again, i tried it a couple years ago, but had horrble contams, but i guess it could been quality of it... I figured by now there would be someone/place selling the actual material of the filter disc's so you could just cut your own and save money..  thanks

Yep, what Chaotic said.
Go to any hobby store (Hobby Lobby is the one I use)
Go towards their fabric section and you'll see a ton of polyfil.
Right were that polyfil is, you'll see the polyfil that is in sheets or a roll of it in a bag. You'll want it dense and semi thick, but it's 100% synthetic. Just cut out quarter or so pieces from it and bingo bango, your own SFD for cheap. You'll have a TON of leftover for future use if needed.

(edit to add) You shouldn't get contams if you RTV Red silicone seal it to the lids and then pressure cook them.

Whatever. No sponsors sell EZ Felt, and hobby lobby is the cheapest place I could find it. I couldn't care less about their religious beliefs or Jews being offended by them.

I just got ptfe media filters as a sfd.
I've asked before what makes an sfd but never got a true answer.

It is NOT filter paper!

My understanding is its the same thing as ez-felt (pressed polyfil material) its just rated: filtration rate of 99.97% and will filter down to .3 microns.

Ez-felt and other materials have no micron rating.

thats a post i made in january about felt filters. i dont remember if i mention it in the post but i get that shit in the walmart arts n craft section right down the isle from my little zip-lock baggies that are penny a piece (100 for a dollar).

If you go EZ felt make sure it's the stiffened variety not the floppy kind.
I refuse to shop at Hobby Lobby for the reason someone else posted earlier but Michael's and Wal-Mart also carry it.  Should be about $.99 for an 8.5x11 sheet and that'll make a ton of you cut them the size of a quarter.

And the S in SFD stands for synthetic. There's nothing synthetic about cellulose it's actually quite organic hence it attracting mold since probably half of the kingdom of fungi specializes in metabolizing the stuff.

Yeah haha
I've tried utfse and didn't find a good answer to the question what made up a sfd. I'll try to find it again.

Ended up with 200x ptfe .22 micron hydrophobic media filters.

The filters have rabies?  How does being afraid of water repel water?

EZ felt is not the same as the material synthetic filter disks are made of.  The early ones were PTFE, but the ones aloha medicinals sell retain their micron rating after repeated autoclave cycles.

When I was a kid(1950s) in the age before saran wrap, we had cellophane to wrap stuff up in. I've been trying to convince manufacturers to develop filter patch bags out of the stuff.  The idea is if they make it thick enough to withstand autoclaving, it would keep the contents sterile long enough to colonize, at which point the mycelium would also colonize the bag.

The biggest guilty conscience I get from mushroom farming is all the plastic waste I send to the landfill every month.  We need to find a better way.

So Roger rabbit, I must ask... What material makes up a synthetic filter disc? As sold by our wonderful vendors here?
Ptfe? Polypropylene? Pvc? Cellulose?

You said ptfe was the earlier models... What's the standard today?

Hey all,

Just found this and wonder how it would perform on grain jars? Maybe double layer. It's polypropylene,  glazed. I don't know the pore size though.

Please don't get angry at me if I'm right or wrong but I think people high up that know what they are made of would loose money if we knew that we could probably go somewhere like hobby lobby to get the material to cut our own sfd's I might be wrong but I do know that they have to be used in other instances and easier to buy face to face in some store just a different name.

Hobby Lobby? The people who use their business influence to take away human rights because of their cherry picked ideology?

Places not to go
1) walmart
2) hobby lobby
