a little help??

A little patch caught my eye this morning walking around campus. I'm in NY. Picked a few and unfortunately, no blue bruising. Is this an end all? Did some digging and found A LOT of Sclerotia. Is sclerotia at all characteristic of Galerina's? Any help would be greatly appreciated...

I didn't know Pholiota produced sclerotia. I always thought that was just Atlantis 7 and those Mexican species. Did you take any pictures?

Squinting to see that print, but I think this makes it Agrocybe, no?

And just for the hell of it I'll post pics of the sclerotia when I get it cleaned up and a print once they've been sitting there longer.

Lots of mushrooms produce sclerotia. They're a good way of surviving fire and drought. Morels, Pleurotus tuber-regium, and some strains of maitake all produce sclerotia.

So how would one go about finding morel truffles? I have a few areas that were booming with them this spring. Can they be how should I say... excavated?

Can you also transplant maitake sclerotia to another oak?

Morel sclerotia is about 1-2 mm in diameter, so yeah, we won't be eating morel truffles any time soon. But it can be excavated from the mycelial network, probably, and transferred to another place. Not sure if that would actually work tough.

I buried a hen that went south before I ate it under a different oak. We'll find out come next year if it actually works. It's roughly the same concept, granted a rotting mushroom probably already has contaminates.
