Can anyone ID this species for me, thanks. Found in a cow pasture, 50 degree avg temp past week, 3 days of rainfall. Marks on stems are from fresh pinch, only 10-15 seconds old.

Panaeolus cyanescens or one of the close allies.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it. If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

I don't think they are cyans. I'd say Panaeolus papilionaceus.

The apparent toothy marginal veil remnants are unusual for this group, are they not?
[edit: ah; that would make sense. am I imagining the blue?]

P. papilionaceus doesn't bruise blue. Panaeolus cyanescens should be adequate name for all intents and purposes. But psychoactive Panaeolus anyway. They do look weird, but the blue bruising is quite noticeable.

Hmm... I usually see blue bruising fine on my screen. Not seeing any at all, not to mention other macroscopic features like the margin of the pileus.

I don't even have a reasonable idea of this screen's color accuracy yet.

There is no apparent blue color that I can distinguish. The stem was already darkish to begin with, I pinched it in a few places and I can see a different shade of dark come through but nothing apparently blue.

looks to me like there's blue on the top right of the cap on the last picture and the base in the second one.

I did too, but Eclipse3130 is the only one to see them with his own eyes, and hold them in hand.

I think anyone seeing blueing is tricking themselves. There is no blue bruising, and the OP confirmed that.

There is no blue in real life. The stem was whitish dark like the last picture above and it turned very dark with bruising. I will throw up 2 more pics of what it looks like currently.

In the first picture the blue on the stem is very obvious. That is how Panaeolus cyanescens bruises. OP, clear pictures of a cross section would be helpful.

OP: For future reference, the whole discussion about blue versus no blue bruising could have been avoided by filling in a proper id request, as explained in the forum. Nice pictures, though, I wish more were this clear.

No problem, i'll be sure to do this next time. Here's some more pics. As you can see near the very tip top of the stem where it meets the cap that was its original color, right below is what it turned into after bruising.

The black stuff on the pileus is just black residue stuff, it was wet in the field, yeah probably spore smudge.

This matter is already settled. Our debate which looks like it's turning unfriendly is only a side issue.
Sorry for derailing your thread Eclipse3130.

Taxonomy debates always end up seeming unfriendly, lol... Just gotta remember, its just discussion.
And its good, cause it causes you to reevaluate your mushroom skills, compare, share, debate, discuss and reinforce that knowledge until it becomes a refined skill burned into your brain, which is really important.. thats why I like shroomery, its a very useful educational tool...
Sometimes reading emotions from words typed on a screen can be very deceptive.
Unless its an obvious attack, there is really no need to get offended or defensive.
Its all good!
