You want the short half pints.
Hey NAH I know you're a smart good guy that has awesome contributions but do you speak from experience on this or the rhetoric of the forums? Because all I have ever used is the regular mouth half pints because the wide mouth are impossible to find and routinely are not even available on amazon. I have never once had a jar stall, never had lower than average yields(I get at the very least 4dry grams always from them) I have even had good success with full pint jars, but they do take forever to colonize but have never stalled. Sure I would advocate getting the wide mouth if available since they're recommended by all of the people who have been around the block but at the same time to completely dismiss the tall half pints is pretty ridiculous IMO since they work amazingly well in practice.

if anything the crowded space promotes better growth as the cakes provide the ambient atmosphere for each other... kind of a one hand washes the other thing.

I can agree with this. I have never had problems stacking cakes. The tall half pints stack well too. Like I said earlier here use a toothpick or two if you have trouble and make sure tin foil is between the cakes. Stacked cakes perform just as well as non-stacked IMO and it's just a better use of space.

as for people worrying about crowding PF cakes. A bulk substrate is just a assload of square cakes really crowded together. Think about a monotub it's only got surface area on the top. We worry about fruiting conditions FAE,RH,Light, temperature. Those are way more important than surface area. As long as you have a enough surface for pinning and optimum fruiting conditions then the cake will produce what It was always going to produce, in my experience. Don't forget Mycellium is a network made to carry nutrients to fruit bodies.

Scratch the idea of the Martha, I didn't realize they weren't that good with cakes. Since I'm gonna spend a few days away at one time i think i'm gonna end up making a few PMP's.

I think you should try several methods with that many jars, but if you're just dying to get something quickly I think the multiple SGFC approach will be a good bet, I've got results so far on my first grow with it and I sometimes only mist twice a day due to my work schedule.

Alright guys,
you did it (rightly so too)
I'm going to do a few SGFC's and I may even stack the cakes.
After much research through old and new info it seems they are my best bet...yes, you guys were right...
But hey, wish me luck guys! Hopefully this turns out like i've been dreaming!
What do you guys think of using a 50 gallon tub for a SGFC?

Yes I speak from experience, and I also repeat what is constantly said on the forums.
They tend to stall for some people, now this could be from many reasons, but the main reason is the substrate gets compacted towards the bottom, which is actually what I experiences with my first few grows...I documented at least one of them here.
Now this does not mean they will do this for everyone, but it can and does happen, the search results speak for themselves.

I tried both kinds of jars when I was doing cakes and I had success with both. However I saw much faster colonization times with the wide mouth jars and they fruited just as good if not better than the tall skinny jars.
The fact of the matter is that you never see people having trouble with the wide mouth jars stalling on the bottom but we see it all the time with the tall skinny jars. If you put the substrate in the tall jars really loose and have course verm then you probably won't have a problem. Just remember what can work for you may not work for everyone. On average we have seen much better results on the board from the short wide mouth jars with no stalling issues. We can't say the same for the tall skinny jars

One question...how the hell do you get a cake out of a regular mouth jar? It tapers...

They make 1/2 pint jars both in wide mouth and in regular mouth, both tapered so the cakes just slide right out.
The tall ones are regular mouth, and the short ones are wide mouth.

I didn't read all the replys but good luck stacking cakes from regular jars, they'll fall over, I had a hard enough time keeping mine from falling over while fanning, and they were only single stacked.
If I was you I'd switch to bulk, its easier than dealing with that many cakes, and it's better.

Yeah I have to agree. If you want more yield switch to grains and bulk growing. Doing an ass load of cakes is too much work imo.

I feel you guys and I am living and learning with this one.
Bulk is definitely the next step if all goes well here!
And yeah Stromrider I like that advice. In a fortunate turn of events I forgot to tamp down most of the jars I filled, making for a pretty loose mixture that colonized very well! If I ever do jars again though I will definitely be using wide mouths and tamp them down. My mistake just happened to help a little this time it seems.
I'll get some pics up when the babies get birthed.
Stay tuned

It's only 12 5/8inches tall.
After the perlite you'll only have ~8inches between the perlite and the lid, then after the cakes you'll only have like ~4inches between the cakes and lid.
so idk, it should work as long as none of them get too tall I guess.

Even if they do get tall, it'll be fine. They'll just curl over. If they wanna pop your lid off, weigh it down with something.
