CBS Was More Pro-War Than Fox News
Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003
CBS's coverage of the so-called "Showdown With Saddam" was more positive (pro-war) than Fox's, according to a new study conducted by the Center for media and Public Affairs. ABC, by a substantial margin, was the most negative on the war, concluded the study, as reported in the Washington Post.

Examining 1,131 stories on the CBS, NBC and ABC evening newscasts, as well as Fox?s ?Special Report With Brit Hume,? the study concluded:

"CBS Evening News" -- 74 percent positive on-air comments about the conduct of the war. (On CBS, Dan Rather said: "Facts on the ground indicate that overall, from a military standpoint, the invasion continues to go well.")

Fox's "Special Report" -- 60 percent positive. ["Special Report" aired the least combat footage and 47 percent fewer images of civilian casualties.]

"NBC Nightly News" -- 53 percent positive.

ABC's "World News Tonight" "was the most antiwar," -- with 34 percent of the on-air comments rated positive.
War coverage by CNN and MSNBC was not included for budgetary reasons, noted the report.

"If you're expecting to get the same tone of news no matter where you go, you're in for a surprise," said Robert Lichter, president of the Center for Media and Public Affairs, which conducted the study. "It's not a matter of what the reporters say; it's the sources they put on the air."

CBS spokeswoman Sandy Genelius commented that content studies "are always highly subjective. . . . We believe our coverage was fair and represents an accurate picture of the facts as well as a responsible cross section of public opinion," according to the Post.

Paul Slavin, executive producer of the ABC newscast, commented: "I don't know how they characterize 'negative.' If we show antiwar demonstrations, is that negative? Is that neutral? . . . In some cases people were tremendously supportive of the administration but maybe questioning certain tactical decisions," according to the Post story.

For his part Brit Hume, Fox's Washington managing editor, opined that "the war, up to the point of the collapse of Saddam's regime, was pretty successful. There were points where other media fell into the trap of reporting negative scenarios. That was a journalistic error, in my opinion."

According to the report, decisions on which interviews to air were critical. By example, ABC showed an Iraqi man saying: "Saddam Hussein is better than George Bush. Saddam would never allow any of this looting."

Meanwhile, CBS quoted a Marine as saying the Iraqis were "killing their own people and trying to blame a lot of it on the U.S. and the British." ays.

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for that my dear friend is the beginning of the end of any nation. So much for the "liberal media."

It doesn't take a genius of the scientific method to figure the blatant misuse of statistics in that article. How the hell can you quantify "pro-war-ness"?

I still say that Fox is the most right wing pro war news outlet based on the tone of their reporting and stupid, unprofessional comments they make after reporting a story.

People think that if you just say the word "hallucinations" it explains everything you want it to explain and eventually whatever it is you can't explain will just go away. It's just a word,it doesn't explain anything...
