Substrate jars

Hi all,
My substrate jars have been colonizing for over 3 weeks now and most are nearly done though I have two which have some dry looking exposed vermiculite on top and mycelium seems to not go there... Is this a problem? Or should I not worry? How long would I keep them in there before dunking once fully colonized?

Cakes? If so the verm is just a barrier to filter out contaminants.

Yeah, the inert verm layer wont colonize like the rest. You can shake of what you can if you'd like, dunk as usual, either in the jar or outta the jar in something else Some people rinse the verm off, some don't.

Yeah it's like it's a dried bit of verm that sticks out and mycelium won't touch it... Ok I'll take out the cakes and dunk for 24 hours then roll.
I didn't know you could just fill the glass with water and dunk that way.

No there are some spots where verm is visible. So ill wait till they are all white. The exposed top is definitely hard dry verm. Ill post pic tomorrow.

The dry verm layer will sometimes colonize if you incorrectly leave the foil on. This causes it to get damp and then the mycelium will crawl right into it.
After you birth the jars, rinse them off under running water until all the uncolonized parts are washed away. Rub it with your hands under the faucet to ensure it's all one solid cake.
You can see it all being done on the brf tek videos. RR
