New TBM
    #18955893 - 10/09/13 06:46 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

I have just received my T. Bridgesii Monstrose.

I unpacked the plant unbundled the roots and planted it in a 8 inch pot in a 5050 mix of cactus potting soil and perlite.

I placed said pot in front of west facing window which gets maybe an hour of direct light a day, I have not watered.

My problem is that the top of one of the pups is yellow (it was that way when it arrived) and is developing black spots on the sides. Anyone know what's wrong with the little guy?

If those spots are hard, they just happen sometimes on Trichocereus. I'd just continue to wait a week or two before watering your newly-potted plant, to avoid causing root rot in case of any roots damaged during potting. Update when it gets bigger!

more sun/light should clear up that yellowing after awhile.

The White pups are an indication that the plant has been in poor light for a time. You need to slowly introduce it to stronger light over  period of a couple of weeks, doing this will help the cactus regain its normal colour. If you put it out in strong light now it will burn that growth. You treat it similar to etiolation, this has been discussed a lot over the years on the forum and a quick search should give you all the information you need.

Thank you all for the replies.

I hear you on the slow introduction to light, that is why I assumed less than an hour of direct light a day would be sufficient as a transition/dormant phase.

I'll admit I was worried the black spots were from sun burn, but from what I gather one receives a more purple colouration due to sunburn rather than black spots.

It does put me at ease(these spots are the "hard" kind)to hear the spots are just normal genetics for Bridgesii.

Thanks again.

Pup is yellow because it has got warmth in very dark place. It's starting etiolate cause of heat but lack of light.

Black spots, let them be on the plants, the will disappear. It's common they occur at spring and fall time to trichocereus plants.

No matter of yellow growth, it's lack of light only.

BTW: when I got plant and get it out from parcel, I just plant it to pot, let it be at somewhere where is light, then I give full light to it, in few days. Only some plants shock and makes black spots and so on cause strong light or humidity but they are okay. I got sometimes black spots around cactus to side where the light comes.. Also at spring time some trichos have black spots to skin cause some shock of light(for example moving them from indoors to greenhouse)

You have kept cactus in too shady or almost dark place with poor light, it has start to etiolate.

Etolating without yellow = Heat is okay but light is missing seriously.
Etiolating with green epidermis = Cold weather, water and short day makes this but light amount is strong. This is said "winter growth" more commonly.

Sometimes etiolating with epidermis is just lack of light but eiolating with yellow growth is simply cause total lack of light.
