"Hipster" and the people who use that term 1
#18955221 - 10/09/13 04:37 PM (10 years, 3 months ago) |
|
|
“Hipster” is a term co-opted for use as a meaningless pejorative in order to vaguely call someone else’s authenticity into question and, by extension, claim authenticity for yourself.
It serves no convers8tional function and imparts no information, save for indic8ing the opinions and preferences of the speaker.
Meanwhile, a market myth has sprung up around the term, as well as a cultural 8ogeyman consisting of elusive white 20-somethings who wear certain clothes (but no one will agree on what), listen to certain music (no one can agree on this either), and act a certain way (you’ve probably sensed the pattern on your own).
You can’t define what “that kind of 8ehavior or fashion or lifestyle” actually is, nor will you ever be a8le to. That’s 8ecause you don’t use “hipster” to descri8e an actual group of people, but to descri8e a fictional stereotype that is an outlet for literally anything that annoys you.
The twist, of course, is that if it weren’t for your own insecurities, nothing that a “hipster” could do or wear would ever affect you emotionally. But you are insecure about your own authenticity - “Do I wear what I wear because I want to? Do I listen to my music 8ecause I truly like it? I’m certainly not like those filthy hipsters!” - so you project those feelings.
Suffice it to say, no one self-identifies as a hipster; the term is always applied to an Other, to separate the authentic Us from the inauthentic, “ironic” Them.

a hipster is just anyone who 'tries' to be in a scene or trend and thus it can apply to lots of people if you go by that definition. nothing wrong with being a hipster as long as you aren't snooty imo.

it's already been explained in OP. the people who like to use the term as a platform for insinuating who is what, are really the hipsters. people who are "called hipsters" by those people, aren't really the hipsters.
it's like if 8 decided 7 wasn't so cool, and he was cooler. "the hipster" eats that person, and now he thinks he's cooler. that's why the other numbers are always a few steps away from him. because they know that he's a hipster. but it's not like they are gonna get rid of him, though, because they aren't hipsters.

There are definitely a group of people you can categorize as "hipsters".
I'm sorry, but there is no relative approach to this term. My understanding is that it's based on some sense of an ironic approach to fashion and pop culture (correct me if I'm wrong).
Hipsters seem to be having the same identity crisis punk rockers ran into when they hit mainstream. The more mainstream they approach, the harder they try to become what they initially symbolized, and by this, the more mainstream it becomes.
A vicious cycle.

Reminds me of grunge and hippies, when they were still fairly spontaneous. I get the idea that people took classic or obsolete fashions and updated them. This is done with cooking, art, music, antique restorations, with the intention of being independent.
Hipster is usually said disparagingly, when a niche hobbyist is a B personality type.

I have a question.
What is considered a good fashion sense for a 20-something-year-old without fitting into subgroups too easily?
Picture examples would help.

That's what I'm trying to figure out, though. What is style if it will ultimately be categorized in some type of subgroup? It seems like everything has been done without being different.
Again, I know nothing about fashion.

you should only try the style thing to pick up chicks. that's it. chicks for hopefully dirty and completely meaningless sex.
if you need style for anything else, then... i'd recommend NO JEANS and NO TEES.
that's pretty much the only rules, for casual wear that isn't drab. if you want to look nice, don't think over-alls... think cover all. as in cover your as in sleek wear that makes you look boss and doesn't make you look like a clown to yourself in the mirror. then you have Fashion.
why people makes such a big deal about Fashion, i'll never know.

As I get older, fashion is becoming more important for me to consider. Especially in terms of networking. I really do believe you should dress your best on whatever occasion (according to the occasion, of course), because it will never be known who you will meet, and what opportunities will arise.
Your clothes speak a lot about who you are, more or less. They say you cannot judge a book by its cover. That is somewhat false, you can ultimately tell what the general theme is going to be based on a person's physical presentation.

It's possible to adapt hipsterish clothes to a formal dress code, but the lifestyle implies that this would be optional.
People, who just want to look up-to-date, in a generic sort of way, could study a boxstore clothing catalog.

Quote:
Vriska Serket said: “Hipster” is a term co-opted for use as a meaningless pejorative in order to vaguely call someone else’s authenticity into question and, by extension, claim authenticity for yourself.
No hipster admits being a hipster. You sound like a hipster. Its not a bad thing either, its just a category for people. They are kind of lame, but nothing wrong with that. Some of my friends are hipsters, it seems like more people in the NYC area are hipsters.

I always use it as a synonym for trendy. Taking terminology like that too seriously is silly. I think they're prone to acting proud because they associate trendy with cool, just like every other trend of the past.
As for music, indie pop and folk??

I'm finding complicated music, on homemade instruments, and feel more cultured. I consider it admirable. Sometimes, they chat someone up, in the middle of a gig, even a cheesy one, and they start to play really talented, spirited songs. These people challenge themselves.

I'm going to say that most people don't think very much about what they wear, or how they live.
Anyone who pays attention to stuff like that will tend to stand out, for one reason or another.
It's easy to say that they're trying too hard, but most people wouldn't bother to try.

it's easy for nobodies to judge. no offense to anybody, but you're really "there" if you have no judgement, and can understand everyone gets where they want to be by defining themselves and their actions, and once you're "there", you really have no room to judge because to get "there" you really have to go through everything that you would have judged anyways.

Why do you think trannies have small dicks? Considering they are chicks, they have huge dicks.

Its a little immature when people have the nerve to put a silly label on you. I've been called it a fair amount of times since I have my own unique taste, I listen to music that most people have never heard of, watch foreign films, read obscure books, so naturally I encounter many people whom might define me as a hipster when in reality I'm only seeking for a medium which will allow me to view things in a different light. I'll admit that I'm quite a "fanboy" since I purchase many t shirts of my favorite bands etc, but I don't think that should automatically make you seem like a hipster. As long as the person wearing the shirt, or claiming to be such a great fan of this & that can provide you with sufficient details of whatever that brand of entertainment is, and you can see from them that they know what they are talking about, so much that the person they are speaking to might, from your enthusiastic following of them, might go out and listen to that band.

I get called a hipster all the time because of my style of dress, it's always just teasing and only a couple of my friends(who I could also say are hipsters) do it.. it doesn't really bother me or bring me down, but I guess I don't realize how much of a fucking hipster I am 'till I leave Philadelphia.
The other night I literally said "I think anyone who self-identifies with or depends on a counter culture to form an identity is stupid"
and all I got was "THAT'S THE MOST HIPSTER THING I'VE EVER HEARD, PB!"
fuck it.

Vriska Serket said: “Hipster” is a term co-opted for use as a meaningless pejorative in order to vaguely call someone else’s authenticity into question and, by extension, claim authenticity for yourself.
Do I listen to my music because I truly like it? I’m certainly not like those filthy hipsters!” - so you project those feelings.
Suffice it to say, no one self-identifies as a hipster; the term is always applied to an Other, to separate the authentic Us from the inauthentic, “ironic” Them.
I've been called one but it doesn't bother me, although I do see your point very clearly. Quote-worthy post, man

I find that many males use either the term "hipster" or "douchebag" for another male who is socially "cooler" and better able to attract a mate.

It used to be that hipsters were the people who called other people hipsters in a derogatory way, usually to insult their taste in clothing that nobody normal would wear and music that nobody normal would listen to. Now the word means you are a douchebag who wears a vest and fedora.
