Being Appreciated.
    #18954708 - 10/09/13 02:36 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

I understand the whole ego situation people deal with and luckily I have become conscious to all that and slowly letting my ego die but lately I have been dealt a lot more task for my day to day routine at work.

Sometimes I sit in a small ass room for 6 hrs messing with a vinyl cut machine and I come back  to my main working area and people are just
lounging around.

I came here as a production assistant (for graphics) and I am now photographing products, photographing a product model, some video editing, some motion graphics, and that stupid ass vinyl machine along
with other random task. So this vinyl crap isn't something I should
be doing. Yet they gave me the task, and now it cuts into my other
work and some days I fall behind.

I was told I might get a raise next year, MIGHT.
Ive only gotten one raise when my probation period was over
in my first 3 months of being here which everyone gets.

I am prob the most creative person here, that has a lot of well rounded
skills, yet no one cares.

Do you think that me feeling under appreciated and feeling like I
truly deserve even a small raise, is something that my ego makes me
think? Is it really just me wanting attention for the work I produce
here or is feeling under appreciated  something that isnt related to
having an overpowering ego?

Hmmm if it were me I would drop the notion of changing my ego entirely, but of course that's not what you're asking.
No, I think it's a perfectly normal and healthy thing for an individual to want to be appreciated. I've worked a lot of places and have found that feeling unappreciated, while pretty common, is not a healthy thing for an organization. I have worked several places where I felt my work was taken seriously, and even without any financial proof to show for it i was glad to feel that way. this is not normal, and if you feel underappreciated it's probably not your ego, it's probably the truth. I would confront someone about this, maybe threaten to leave, or just go ahead and say screw you guys and go find some place where your talents will be appreciated.
Some bad places I have worked actually tried to get me to think that I should stop feeling that way, that everyone feels that way, and that no other place is going to be any different. Those employers are manipulative and run a bad operation, and what they say is absolutely not true. If you're in that situation, I encourage you to find the strength to get the hell out of there.

Oh, I just noticed you're in Cali. This is especially common in SoCal. If you can't take the heat of that area, get out! The only happy people in southern california are the ones who are already successful.

EDIT: I should say south western cali: Los Angeles greater area, san fernando, san bernadino, malibu, orange county, etc... The places along the border with arizona like blythe etc are all pretty chill. more like west arizona than east california. But one you cross the mountains, it's all over.

Today I quit a day-job, being experienced in the industry I know the quality of my work from the compliments of various managers / coworkers / customers over the years. The people I was working with didn't appreciate my work so I quit and picked up another day job.

Why deal with the stress when there are other opportunities? They didn't like my work, I didn't like their attitude about my work, so I'll go somewhere else and they'll hire someone else. A week from now they'll have replaced me and I've already replaced them.

Although I will say if you live in LA, that's a dog eat dog city. Might be hard to find decent people to work with, at least that was my experience in LA.
