Humidity tents and trays.
    #18949206 - 10/08/13 11:44 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

So in my quest to do away with tubs and not have to fiddle with a GH, I had an idea.

Could you not make a tray about as long and deep as a monotub sub, pasteurize your sub, add spawn, then lay a thick mil plastic over it relatively tightly mimicking a top. Then when you induce fruiting simply prop up a corner on each end for some fae?

Understandidly have to fiddle with the opening height a tad at first to balance fae vs RH but it should in theory just work like a humidity tent, no?

I'm sure if you're doing a large tray this way you probably can't depend on the mushies themselves to raise such a thick area of coverage plastic so some sort of increment system would have to be put into play and raised every few days mayhaps.

But trays done like such in a room that's already 65% RH should really pose no threat of drying out.
But running a small circulating fan in the room should provide adequate air current to make this feasible.

Thoughts from the community?

I hate to do this but *bump*. Hate when my shiznit gets buried by the "is this what mycelium looks like?" Threads.

Not that I think I'm more important but the bulk of redundant noob threads sometimes irks me.

Ie: "its been 3 minutes since I knocked up my jars, had them sitting on a super heating pad and covered them with a bra to keep out light so they wouldn't pin. Why don't I see any growth yet?"

Said tray could also be put into a green house.

The point is to avoid a GH all together. I've seen a grow RR did basically using this principle. It was either him or agar.

The basic principle on a small scale works like the wax paper tek and the mushies push it up on their own. This is a tad different but a few of the same principles apply.

Like placing plastic plastic over colonized straw? You should just go ahead and try your idea out and take some pics. I'm imagining a long pan that will have some kind of a roof built over it to allow for humidity to be retained as well as co2 levels to be high for colonization.

That's pretty much the concept. I have a small scale project colonizing for this purpose but I don't know how well scalable it is.

You know, a container is a container, be it plastic, rubber, saran a wrap, bags, whatever. Know the parameters of mushroom growth for each phase/stage, and meet them.

Ensure light, humidity, fresh air/gas exchange....the right temps... and get creative!

Why thick plastic? Seems like more of a pain to work with, unless it's thick enough (6 mil) to support itself up like a miniature hoophouse.

Lol I agree gretchen but I am looking for opinions on this proposed method.

By thick I merely meant something a bit more sturdy than Saran wrap

My opinion of the proposed method is that I have seen it done successfully and not successfully over the years.  The dividing factor seemed to be dialing in adequate fresh air and also being able to maintain a decent rH.

The projects I saw that were more successful were poo based, cased grains (old style) performed, but not well.  I have only seen one coir sub in a humidity tent and it did not do well (probably for various factors).  I have done the bulk coir invitro bag grow, which is kind of similar to a humidity tent, and coir sub did not perform as well as poo/straw sub...I think because of poo's awesome ability to retain water, and produce a little more heat on its own than coir (passively noted).

I think this method could be popular if dialed in right, for folks looking to do more than cakes but still remain small scale and stealthy, and have minimal materials to invest in.

Well my experiment will be small scale but if semi successful I will attempt larger beds, say 3x6. I think it has a good chance to work in my grow room as the RH stays glued on 65% and with the inclusion of non completely enclosed subs, it will only reason to raise the RH of the room a tad.

Wouldn't have a link to any of these grows would you? I've searched for examples but couldn't find anything relevant.

Search the bubble wrap tek.  I have grown with trays and bubble wrap only before with much success:zaphod:

I'm familiar with the bubble wrap tek to induce pinning but my worry is the lack of coverage as I'm looking at making larger than average trays. I would need a good bit of overhang on the sides and a bit on the ends to be able to elevate as fruits grow and not leave too huge of a gap between where the bubble wrap ends and my sub level so as not to let in too much fae and destroy my humidity.

Edit: upon re reading tmethyls post I see that he does indeed use a bit of overhang of plastic, or RR does. So good call and reference.

On a side note does anyone see any obvious drawbacks to covering large trays with plastic and essentially keeping them in place as a fruiting tent?

I spent years modding the #cultivation chat room, most folks used image uploads, and we chatted in real time about daily progress etc... if I can remember the user names I will see if they left any photos in their journals.

Now apprentice, you did read I'm doing this in just a regular room with only 65% RH and not a GH right?

Also the pic with the "fruiting tent" looks as if it has holes in in for fae I assume. How do you use your bubble wrap, to induce pinning only or as a kind of humidity tent for the life of the grow?

Id love to pick RR's brain about the pic of the plastic tent in the bubble wrap tek but I'm sure his inbox is full enough as it is.
