1- Ouch. I'm really glad right now that I never used silk road.

2- Am I the only one who picked up on the wording above? I wonder if that's significant. notice how they're not talking about a bust of drug dealers. Nowhere is the selling of drugs mentioned in relation to those arrested, and I can't help but wonder if they're going after some customers.

Did that not happen with webtryp, in the UK?

The guy in Washington selling heroin they busted for instance was using his own  PO Box and fake name as a return address and sent packages through express mail. It's likely these guys did something stupid like that too. I never even logged on SR when it was up but I thought I had read somewhere sensitive data like addresses were coded to be automatically encrypted.

Actually, if we're talking about the same case, that's not how that guy got busted. They did get his PO box, but he wasn't dumb enough to use that as a return address for an order. He used random return addresses (real ones), with names that did not match the address. A random package was spotted when they were doing interdiction with a dog. If I remember correctly (I read the whole indictment) they then contacted the persons at the return address, and confirmed that there was no one living there with that name. They said they didn't care if the inspectors opened it, so they did, found drugs, etc.

If I remember right, supposedly a dog hit on another package, giving a positive signal for drugs, so they opened it. The package did not contain drugs, but rather a large amount of cash (a few grand, I think.. and I thought that part was weird-- why did the dog hit for drugs, if there were no drugs?)  That package was addressed to a PO box (or the box was the return-- I forget which), which belonged to the dealer. And from there, they pretty much had him.

They sounded liked like they knew bust was coming, told everyone they had to get their bitcoins out, meaning they were not a scammer, scammers wouldn't do that, they would just shut down and take everything.
Anyway I have a friend who gets my packages to his house, if he got busted it wouldn't even be the worst thing that happened to him this week. He's happy with 5 percent of whatever I am getting for the small risk. Also hobos all have ID so they can get government handouts and will sign out a po box and give you the key for a 6 pack.
SR had so many users you probably don't need to worry unless you ordered 10 grand in drugs 10 days ago to your house or something crazy. And should you get a knock or call deny fucking everything.

What they are trying to do is discourage future and past users from continuing the online drug trade. The media will run press releases of police saying "we know who is responsible" and the cops will be able to make a few busts from stupid people (no encryption, storing keys online somewhere). They hope the average person will see this and think "oh powerful government how could I ever be so dumb as to think I could outsmart you!!!".

They have nothing. They may make more arrests than this from people who didnt encrypt their messages, but this is insignificant. The concept of an online anonymous drug trade is something more powerful than any government agency. As long as people utilize and develop technologies to remain anonymous it will exist and thrive, hopefully delivering the final blow in the so called "war on drugs".

It just seems strange to me that they shut down their website due to "security reasons" 2 or 3 weeks before SR get busted.

Did they know the FBI was going to come down and bust these black markets? And if they did know how did Atlantis know and how did SR not know?

Dogs are trained to sniff for cash as well as drugs/guns/explosives etc, common procedure.

Yeah I think we're talking about the same guy, 'NOD'. I hadn't read anything past the news articles on Shroomery which didn't give much info so my understanding was a little skewed. Still it would appear to me the fact they were using express mail was what got their packages noticed along with the fake names. Dogs scan express mail a lot better - priority not so much. Dogs are trained to smell cash too. I've heard pigs use the whole 'oh the dog alerted to your cash must be tied to drugs so let's seize it' spiel before when they're trained to smell cash as it is. If that's not enough to make the drug war look like a scam then I don't know what is.

I noticed it said users of Silk Road as well but I would assume these fellows were vendors. Anyone on Silk Road technically could be considered a user, so they threw that in there to scare real users. I mean they could have just been customers, but they seized millions of dollars in BTC from just 4 people which would lead me to think their involvement was not small. So vendor or major user re-selling stuff from SR. Now I never got on SR but I had the impression most of the drugs on there were being sold in small quantities at higher than typical street prices, which would make it seem rather hard to make millions re-selling drugs you got from SR.

The feds?

Silk road had every major global law enforcement agency and NASA cracking the encryption. Those fucker's are probably having a hay-day.

Spare yourself time behind bars, do not order from anyone unless it's a trusted Tor distributor. There is just as many agents working Tor as there are cops patrolling the streets.

Not to mention, they ran a dummy Silk road site that acted as a proxy between transactions being done on SR. So if you were a new user within the last two years or got the wrong onion address, the chances you're browsing and transaction history was recorded is obvious.

There was also a google re-direct site to "Enter the tor gateway" this was also another monitored proxy site.

Don't get me wrong, the actual exchange of goods and services between clients and sellers is very secure on the sellers end, just not the clients. (If duped by fake-redirect site or entered the .onion via google)

and if you did something as dumb as that, you've got it coming.

Well anyways folks.... As I said in another posting about this, I had my countries equivalent of the FEDS knocking at my home door around the same time they took down Dread and the others. I never sold (thank god) or made a transaction so now I'm left to wonder..... What dumb fuck am I going to punch out for blowing me out of the water with them?

If you bought in bulk you could certainly have made good money selling things to third parties, just had to invest a reasonable amount. Also some things like white heroin just aren't available on the whole in many parts of the world, people would also pay more for real quality, which was one of the more attractive sides to doing business on SR.

I only know people who got small to moderate amounts for personal use, again because of higher quality goods at similar to street prices. Heroin and cocaine in particular tend to suck a lot of the time in the UK, some of the cocaine on SR was well over 60% purity, even stupidly expensive "good" stuff in the UK is rarely over the 15% mark IME.

Also prices around the world vary dramatically, the prices were an average of combined world street prices really, in the right area some things were definitely cheaper on SR.

Good bud in the UK costs around $400+ an ounce now, it's more than doubled in the last 5-6 years, I doubt people in Cali or Colorado are paying anywhere near that for average weed. People are happy to pay $15 for less than a gram of often wet and bog-standard bud, I quit about a year ago after a 15 year daily habit as it was getting more expensive than a heroin habit..
