Found this research paper released this month on Bitcoins. Thought it might be of some interest. The link is to a PDF of the paper hosted on the UCSD website.

Bitcoins are the future.
Amazingly stable for such a young and different currency.
Nobody seems to mention it, but take a look how much is moving around every day!
Massive amounts of money are flowing around anonymously, with no government control. The Gov can't like this and it's a real threat to their authority and currencies.
But what can they do? Could they outlaw bitcoins? How would they stop them?
Seems to me like a major power shift away from governments and to individuals.

I only found out about bitcoins after the SR bust, I've seen them before on torrent sites asking for donations, but I had absolutley no idea the amount and stability - we will see what happens in the wake of the bust how stable these coins really are though, could be a massive drop with sites like SR being a known market/path in which this type of currency is used, might give it a bad name perhaps?
Purely skeptical

Bitcoins have actually been increasing in value since the closing of SR. I've wondered why myself, but I presume it to be due to the thought that many thousands of coins may forever have been lost due to the bust. Only 22 million bitcoins or so are ever going to exist, so any large quantity of them disappearing forever theoretically would increase the value of the rest. I too expected bitcoins to be lose value after the SR bust, but, quite the opposite has occurred thus far.
