PC advice?
    #18953423 - 10/09/13 09:30 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Long story short, I tried to grow mushrooms when I was 17 years old and it didn't go so well. For one, the info that is present today wasn't there then (like the internet). And second, I did not have the money to get the proper equipment so I used things I should not have. In the end I failed hard and never saw any fruits.

Fast forward 17 more years and I am gonna give it another go! This time I am in my mid 30's and have the means to get the proper equipment I need to be successful. I also have this unbelievable site for advice and knowledge. My absolute main goal in this is to be successful.

Since a PC is one of, if not the most important pieces of equipment in this hobby, I had to get one. At first I do not plan on growing huge amounts, I just want to learn to be successful. So I bought a 7.4 QT PC. I do plan on getting a bigger one when I get more experienced at this hobby, but I do want to know what kind of limitations a 7.4 QT PC will have. Essentially, how far can this 7.4 QT PC take me, before I must upgrade?

If you dont plan on growing much then that should get you plenty for.. eventually if u decide to do grain spawn youll be able to do 4 one quart jars at a time... if youd want to do a full batch of 12 then it would take you around 5 hours to run them all through im estimating, give or take... so that would suck. But if you plan on not doing much then you wont have that problem.

It would be easier to comment if we knew the brand.

The main concerns are
  • size -- i.e. how many jars/bags can you fit in there to meet your needs?
  • pressure -- will it get to and hold 15 psi for the required time? (You'll have to adjust timings if the pressure is lower)
  • usability -- are you able to use it successfully without creating angst for yourself?

It's an Imusa and I am using Ball half pint jars and I can easily fit 5 maybe 6 inside the PC without stacking them. According to the Manual, this PC exerts 10.4 PSI. What would my time adjustment be for that? And how different would 10.4 PSI in my PC be compared to the steam pot tek Roger Rabbit uses in his videos? I hope that if 90 mins will suffice for the steam pot tek, then I would hope my PC would be just fine, but again, if I knew for sure I would not be asking here. I assume that the 10.4 PSI is not sufficient for anything above doing BRF jars?

10psi works great for grains as well, that's when you need to up your pc time.
BRF cakes can perfectly fine be sterilized in a regular pot, with no pressure added.

edit: as in no need to up pc time for brf cakes, which I assume you are using because of your half pints.

The general rule of thumb for cooking at 10 psi is to add 4 minutes of cooking time for every 10 minutes of cooking time@15 psi called for in the recipe.

So, if you use a pressure cooker for BRF, then you'd have 60 minutes + (4 * 6) = 84 minutes.

So, you're really not saving any time pressure cooking, and could just use a of boiling water for the procedure.

I think size would be more of a limiting factor using that cooker for grains; but the additional time required might also make the process rather tedious.

Honestly I'm not too worried about time, I am extremely patient as I grow cannabis as well. I am just more concerned on making sure that the sterilization process is as thorough as possible or sterile as possible. I really don't want any contams and I just want to be successful at it.

I guess I should have stated that before, but time is not the reason I chose to go the PC route.

Patience is necessary in all aspects of this hobby, so you're on the right track.

Edit: Regarding your other grow hobby: Colorado is such a civilized state.

Like said above if your doing PF jars you can leave the weight off and steam them in there for 90M or 84M with the pressure on. I use my PC to do PF jars still why not take the extra precaution if you have it. My PC is about the size of yours and it will fit 4 quart jars. I make bulk bricks(see my signature's link). 4 quarts of grain spawn makes me 2 bricks. This is way better than doing PF jars in my opinion.

also, Hell yea Colorado. I went up my first 14K mountain there, Conundrum peak. Awesome hot spring up there too, got free acid from a random camper and an assload of summer sausage. Best state ever.

Right on man, thanks for the advice. And yes I have checked out your link before, good shit man!

Yeah, I am pretty fortunate to be living in this state. It's a great and beautiful place and honestly the worst part of it is the bronco fans, lol! I will only live here or Washington state. I love cannabis too much and the hobby of growing it. I just harvested a couple days ago. I don't want to get too off topic but here is a pic:

Thanks! I am pretty proud of her. Mother nature was good to us this year. We had a warm but not too hot summer and some late heat in Sept. The big rain storm hit right after that late heat and my plants just exploded after that. I harvested 2 I still have one in the ground (Amend. 64 only allows 3 flowering), but mother nature will force my hand in short time. I will be lucky to get a couple more weeks of flowering from that one.

When I buy a new PC I'm going to make sure it can fit a least 4 quart size jars.Funny how everyone around me complains about getting older and I'm having more fun as I age.

Just so you know you're not going have a lower contamination rate sterilizing BRF jars in a PC. Both methods are equally effective. So even if you have a PC, if you also a good pot to use you use both to and prepare more BRF jars at once and save some time.

Amen brother. I recommend getting married while your young, and then getting divorced in your mid thirties. Marriage can keep you out of trouble until you are mature enough to appreciate freedom.
