FORD = Found on road dead (or: Fix or repair daily) HONDA = Had one! Never drive another! SAAB = Sorry! Auto assembled backwards
and my favorite:
MITSUBISHI = Manufactured in Taiwan; sold under British influence; shipped here incomplete.

The commercials pronounce them "tore-iss" but if commercials were correct then "Hyundai" would be prounced "hun-day" and that's completely wrong.

The word is borrowed from another language (Latin,) so the Latin pronunciation is the most "correct." That's where people are getting the "tor" pronunciation from. "Tour" is a confusing way of representing the first syllable, because some people pronounce the word tour more like "toor" and pronounce it more like "tor." If anyone really says it like tooris/toorus though, I have no idea where the fuck they're getting that "oo" sound from.

No wonder canadian.

French has latin pronouciations.
"au" in french in pronounced "o" and "rus" is pronouced like the rus in the english word "Uterus".
It is what it is...

Yes Koraks, even though some sounds were added to the french language during the years, there are still alot of similarities between the named "latin" languages.
Pronunciation of the "au" phoneme is one of those, AFAIK the pronunciation is the same than latin

In Latin the "au" diphthong is typically pronounced like "ou" in blouse or out.

The "u" from which you can normally get an "uh" or "oo" sound modifies the A.
Think about words that have an au combination, you'll see that they don't always retain a normal "a" sound.
Trying to think of some better examples, but the only thing coming to mind right now is some french surnames, with the "eau" combo, which comes out sounding like "oh" or "oo"
How about "aunt" (which, while some people may pronounce it "ant" many say "on-t")
Some might argue that this is more of an "ah" sound... but this can be represented phonetically with an O, because it is a longer, softer "a" sound. Seen in words like "audit" (odd-it), auspicious, auction, audio, etc...
If you feel that's nit-picking and too imprecise, here are some words where the "au" ends up making a more clear "oh" sound, like in "taurus":
"Aura" (or-uh)
"Beau" pronounced "b-oh," homophone of "bow."
"Aural"
"faux"
"au pair"
That's where I get it.
To be fair, I suspect the proper pronunciation should lie somewhere between where I tend to say it most of the time "tore-is" "tore-us" and "tar-"
But I assure you, "au" can make a sound resembling an "o"

Man, I say a lot of things in that list differently.
Audit - aw-dit Auspicious - aw-spish-us Auction - awk-shun Audio - aw-dee-oh Aura - Ar-uh
Beau, faux, and au pair are the only words from your list that I say with the "oh" sound rather than the "aw" sound. Me and my southern-ness.
