Habitat: sandy soil under mixed conifers
Gills: adnexed, white
Stem: tapering down, shaggy below ring
Odor: not much to speak of, maybe slight cinnamon

Looks like a classic matsu to me, although the fact that it has little odor is very odd.
Is the bottom sandy, or is it just dirt?

I think it certainly could be! you should try crushing the base a little and seeing how it smells, or maybe just cut into it. It should have a "spicy odor" which could smell like cinnamon- I think it's a spice.

That's so fucking sweet when you can fulfill a goal you set for yourself like that. Did you go into the forest looking for them? They like ponderosa pine I've heard.

Yeh, it's a matsi. Another tipoff is how they kinda snap off of their attachment. Didja feel that?
Check closely next time you excavate one - you'll see the spodosol layer they like - between the sand/duff on top and dirt below. Carve out a bit forward and a bit deeper than the attachment. It's trippy.

Yup, that attitude seems to work with these. LOL Did that last year, was stoked.
