Making a Millet Jar...

Some friend of mine ordered a big bag of millet, but he can't find out How much water to millet he should add in a Quart sized jar, Maybe somebody here does?

I personally would soak it for 8-12 hours then let it drain for at least half an hour, then load it in, thats my method, adjust draining time depending on moisture in jars

do you need to pressure cook them to sterilize?? or can you sterilize as you would with a pf cake (setting it in boiling water for 1hr)???

Also be sure to shake the jars as soon as the pressure on the pressure cooker equalizes.

So you just add the soaked millet in the jar? YOu don't add water to the Jar itself?

Aerzun, depends on your millet. The stuff I get is very dry, no doubt due to the Aussie climate (arid) in storage.

So, try this (it's 50ml less water than I use):
Go 350ml millet (that's 250 grams millet) with 200ml water with a 1/4 teaspoon of gypsum. The gypsum makes the PC'ed grain easier to shake.

Do it all in the jar, no rinse, no mess. Just sit it 24hrs so it hatches out the endospores and then PC for 75 minutes at 15psi. Pull it out hot, give it a good shake and let it cool over night, then inoculate. It works.

I buy my WBS from Lowes and its more
Milo than Millet but that doesnt seem to
matter , as for my Quart jars I use 2 Cups
WBS to 1cup water without any soaking
and it has been working fine for me , not
to wet not to dry .

my suggestion: soak 12 hours. drain one hour. load jars half-full. to one jar add no extra water. to another add 10ml. to another add 20ml. to another, 30ml. pc all four jars together.

figure out which looks best - hopefully only the bottom 1/3 of the grains look 'too wet' immediately after pcing. then you shake it all up while still hot, and it becomes perfect. you can further fine-tune the water amount if you like.

do this with each new grain source. it really is worth this extra effort, as ideal grain moisture speeds up jar growth considerably, as well as the resultant contam battles won.

:kiss: this is all in TMC, the mushroom grower's bible  :thumbup:. buy it if you can.

so you don't do any soaking at all? hmmm maybe thats why you get such great flushes.....no nutrients lost in the water that drains out

I agree with you Z@Z!! This tek works great!! I'll show everyone in a week or so, how my casings I made using this tek turn out!! So far so good!

I've always wondered how people sterilize jars in a microwave... aren't the lids made of metal? :crazy2:

There are microwavable food storage bags that are made of heavier plastic than regular storage bags (I think they're 'Ziploc' brand). Place one of these over the top of a jar and the metal lid before microwaving. This will prevent electrical arcing to the lid in the oven.

Shirley is correct on playing with the water content to get a good ratio. My first batch of grain was so dry it fell out of the jars like paving sand when I tossed it. So I'm heavier on the water content.

stupaod, I don't rinse. I just add the millet, water & gypsum to the jar to soak 24hrs -- as you see in the pic -- just flip the jars upside down towards the end to drain the Co2. Less mess for sure and no loss in nutes.



I guess if you want to tweak it some more then add some freshwater aquarium water instead. I might give that a go. Aquarium water has certainly got nutes, a number of people are into aquaponics as they run fish in their hydro rez and Cannabis is a gross feeder.

Aerzun, gypsum (calcium sulphate) is found at the garden center, it's often called "clay breaker". Excellent in the garden on heavy soils. Before you use it, make sure you powder it up, just crush any lumps to dust.

Starter in your pic, why are the colonized jars completely full? And should my jars have the much water in them too?

Aerzun, the jars are not totally full, it only appears they are. There is in fact a 20mm gap at the bottom (as the whole lot slid to the lid when it was Co2 drain-inverted) and there's another gap at the top, as the jars are shouldered, it didn't press in flat to the lid. In short, there's enough space to do the grain shake to speed up the colonisation.

In addition, there is a degree of "swell" in the final stages of colonisation, vigorous mycelium puffs up...but by then it's colonised so there's no need to shake. Here's a pic of a jar opened. Note, it's more advanced in growth than the prior pic of millet jars shown. You want it totally white. You'll also note it tends to creep up the jar walls, giving the illusion (at least in a pic) that the jar is as full as a bull's arse.



Now to water content...

I wouldn't suggest you use the ratio of 350ml millet, 250ml water & 1/4 teaspoon of gypsum as I do, as it would most likely be too wet your way. I get very dry seed. Now I did suggest you drop the water content by 50ml and see how you go.

Finally, when I say 350ml millet, that's 250 grams of millet (is so for me). You too can compare ml volume of seed to gram weight of seed, grab a set of scales and a measuring cup. It's a good idea to do that so you know exactly what quantities (weights) you're using with ease of simple volume cups.
