mjmihalov's official media thread

I will post movies, books, television shows, songs/artists, etc... that I like here and hopefully discuss them.

Léon: The Professional

"Léon: The Professional is a 1994 English-language French thriller film written and directed by Luc Besson. The film stars Jean Reno as the titular mob hitman; Gary Oldman as corrupt DEA agent Norman Stansfield; a young Natalie Portman, in her feature film debut, as Mathilda, a 12-year-old girl who is taken in by the hitman after her family is murdered; and Danny Aiello as Tony, the mobster who gives the hitman his assignments."

The first time I came across this movie a few months ago I immediately fell in love with it. It is now one of my favorite movies, I've watched it probably more than 10 times.

Mathilda(Portman) and Léon(Reno) work so perfectly together even though they're so different.

I still get chills when Mathilda is knocking on his door when the the DEA is at her apartment, even though I now know what is going to happen.

This is the movie I got my avatar from.

Yeah, it's my favorite hitman movie, they did a really good job at making someone that kills people for a living a very likeable person.

Brian's Saga (Hatchet, Brians Winter, The River, Brians Return, & Brians Hunt) written by Gary Paulsen

"The first book, Hatchet, was written in 1987 and is the probably the best known of the series. Hatchet won a Newbery Honor and was made into a TV Movie in 1990 called A Cry in the Wild.

Hatchet, the first novel centers around a 13 year old boy named Brian. His parents are divorced and live far apart, and the novel opens up with Brian riding on a small plane to go live with his father for the summer. His mother gives him a hatchet as a gift before he leaves to visit his father, but frankly he thinks it's kind of a crappy present. On the way there, the pilot has a heart attack and Brian ends up taking control of the plane until he can crash land in a lake. The rest of the book deals with Brian's struggles to survive in the Canadian wilderness.

Brian's Winter is an alternate continuity that doesn't lead to Brian getting rescued at the end of Hatchet. Because Hatchet had Brian rescued within a few months, all of them taking place during the summer, Brian's Winter covers what Brian would have to do to survive if he was stranded in the wilderness for the winter.

The River has the government send a researcher into the wilderness with Brian to study the techniques he used to survive. The researcher ends up going into a coma, and Brian has to struggle to bring him down a river to get back to civilization.

Brian's Return deals with Brian's difficulty in adjusting to life back in civilization. He returns to the north woods, ostensibly to visit the Smalls, the family he met at the end of Brian's Winter, but with the intention of taking the long way there...

Brian's Hunt is the final novel, which opens with Brian finding out that a bear has killed a group of people who were important to him. He goes on a hunt to bring the bear to justice."

I discovered these books in fifth grade when I really needed someone to look up to. They instantly became my favorite books and I was hooked, I read them all in a matter of no time, and back then I was your average rebellious white kid from an inner city school who didn't very much like reading. They're what made me realize reading could be fun.

My teacher seen how much I liked them and ended up giving me brand new hardback copies of the books at the end of the year, unfortunately I misplaced them though.

I reread this series once every few years, and even though it was aimed towards a younger demographic than what I'm currently in I still find them enjoyable.

These books have had a huge impact on my life, I want to be like Brian Robeson, I want to go live off the land somewhere like he did, I plan on actually doing this next summer.

Thank you Gary Paulsen for these great books, a lot of his other books are good reads as well, such as NightJohn.

I read hatchet in High School, I think I may have read it twice actually. I thought it was a pretty cool book.

Into the Wild

"After graduating from Emory University, top student and athlete Christopher McCandless abandons his possessions, gives his entire $24,000 savings account to charity and hitchhikes to Alaska to live in the wilderness. Along the way, Christopher encounters a series of characters that shape his life."

I love this movie, it's based off of real life. I plan on doing what he did, but spoiler alert hopefully I don't die at the end of my journey.

My favorite part is the time he spent with the hippies, if my journey is anything like that I'll be pleased.

I highly recommend everyone watch this at least once.

Black Tar Heroin: The Dark End of the Street

Amazing documentary about BTH and how it affected the lives of 5 teens/young adults, it's set in San Francisco in the mid-late '90s.

I really enjoyed it because I am a young adult and I occasionally use heroin, and a few of my friends are becoming addicts. Watching this really helps me keep my use in check.

I actually chatted with Tracey a few times on twitter, she's been clean for a long time now and is a drug counselor.

My favorite one was Alice though, even though she was weird she seemed like a pretty chill person, she's supposedly clean, but she doesn't have a facebook/twitter(that I can find at least.)
EDIT Just found it @Malice666Mcmunn I think she's like a stripper or something, she's gotten even weirder since the movie.

Some of the people are dead, some are clean, some are still using, and some no one really knows what happened.

Here's the full version on youtube.

There's an update from them like 5 years after the movie was made too, I recommend watching it as well. I know when I watched it I was really curious to figure out what happened to them and I was happy to find the update. I even went further and read blogs from one of the people about how they were doing even after the update, then I even went further and contacted one of them to try and figure out how they all were doing.

House M.D.

This is one of my favorite shows, Hugh Laurie does amazing as Dr. House, the whole cast does a very good job honestly.

The first few seasons are great, but the last few are not as good but still watchable.

I've seen every episode between 5-10 times, I rewatch the whole series every few years, I actually just started rewatching them again.

i'm watching it right now. probably my favorite show, even though it's just a hyped up Medical Soap on steroids.

but it doesn't try to hide that fact, and is one of the more informative shows; regardless if you have to fact check the shit.

how bout this dude?

http://theactofkilling.com/

Desperate to understand the rationale behind the mass killings of Communists in Indonesia during the 1960s, the director presents former Indonesian death squad leader Anwar Congo with a unique opportunity -- reenact his savage crimes for the camera in the style of his favorite Hollywood films, and allow him the opportunity to speak candidly about his memories and motivations for committing mass murder. Later, as Congo recalls the various methods he and his followers used to intimidate and slaughter scores of Communists, the reality of his heinous transgressions begin to set in, and vivid nightmares fill his nights with unspeakable terror.
