Organic certification
    #18951634 - 10/08/13 08:34 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

I am able to get organic grains and bran but what do i do about straw?  I know there are others who use it and i believe are organic certified but ppl are telling me it doesnt exist.  Yet my only competition in my city has an organic cert and grows on straw.  I doubt he's going to tell me where he gets it.  But he does microgreens as well and i suspect he got certified for those and just slapped the label on his mushies.

Your organic grains come from organic straw, check into the farms it comes from.

Yeah, there are situational supply exemptions, but I think you would need to talk to your local inspector.  In my experience, people in the USDA are very helpful to get people started with things.  You should call your local USDA office and ask to be connected to their organic certification department.  Let them know you're looking to possibly become certified organic, and that you are having issues sourcing some things.  They may either be able to refer you to local organic grain farmers (where you can get organic wheat or rye straw), or can tell you what you need to do.  That would be my first step.

I have no interest in becoming certified organic, because I am growing mushrooms to feed my friends and family.

that seems like a bigger reason to go organic.  I don't want to feed chemicals to my friends and family but i do have a broader goal overall as well.

I'm using hardwood sawdust and maple chips.  I do use organic oat bran,  but that's what is available to me in bulk for cheap.

Since I'm serving my friends and family there is no need for me to buy an organic certification. Ya dig? I know that all of the things I use are organic,  so who would being certified serve?

This is why I'm thinking about switching to all sawdust bags.  I don't think there are many organic grain farms anywhere near me.  But I also think my local ag extension agent may be closed due to govment shutdown.

Your state dept of agriculture will have a list of certified organic farms. It's probably online on their website.  Find an organic wheat farm and call them up to inquire about straw.

Getting your certification involves a bit more, but if your competition is certified, you'll probably need it to penetrate the market well.

I have always wondered what the costs would be associated with OG certifying a small mushroom farm? Would you be willing to share RR?  If not no worries.

I've been thinking the same thing when it comes to using sawdust.
@liam- I thought you meant organic anything wasn't a concern not just the cert.  I'm not immediately wanting the certification.  But i'd like to be in the process of working towards it the whole way.
@RR-When I say my competetion, they're not really competetion.  They don't do a huge amount of mushrooms and i'm not sure they have enough to even have them for every market they attend.  They are doing everything.  Mostly microgreens and stuff but are dabbling with anything to do with the permaculture idea I believe.  They are a good 30 miles of city away and everyone I talk to in my area is excited at having someone close to home to get mushrooms.  It's a long and tedious process but I love doing this and learning from everyone on the forums experiences   I'm glad to see you back too RR.  You must have had a busy summer so you probalby have some good experiences and new found knowledge to share I hope!

Yeah i wouldnt plan on starting anything like this now.  Gov is shutdown, and debt ceiling increase vote may not come.

Yeah, it's a sad time for our government.  I have been trying to pick up stains and immersion oil from my friend who works for the usda but he hasn't been to work lol And your in the right ballpark drake.  I think i read 800 ish.  Quite expensive being why it will be a process but i figure it's best to start now so that when i can afford it i'll be there with the processes.  You and Aleon have great things going on for you from what I see and I hope I can follow in those foot steps and appreciate all the input I get from everyone.
