How to stay busy in jail?
#18951439 - 10/08/13 07:56 PM (10 years, 3 months ago) |

Hey guys, so basically the title says it all. What can I do to stay busy in jail? I'm looking at a small amount of time in county (7 months) and i'm afraid of going batshit crazy in there.
I've only ever been to jail once, and it was for 2 months. I know the obvious ones, like reading, writing, and playing cards, but what are some other things I could do in there to keep busy? Thanks in advance.

Totally did this exact thing last time I was there! It was a good time for about 3 days, then one of the deputies decided that we weren't allowed to do it anymore.

I won't be going until mid December because the judge was nice enough to let me finish up this semester of school. I'm trying to stay relatively sober until I go. However, I am planning on taking one last acid journey before then. And I do a lot of writing in my free time, so i'm sure i'll crank out some short stories when i'm there.

I would offer to write to you, but I'm currently writing to another Shroomerite who is in jail for the next 6 months, and it'd be kinda difficult to keep up with two.

Start saving money to take with you to buy commissary, a lot of times you can buy stuff like radios and other shit to kill time, also buy shit to trade and gamble with.
You can spend like an hour a day working out.
And I know you already said it but cards are a good way to waste some time.
Also board games are good time killers.
And I know you already said this, but reading. That's the way I spent most of my jail time, just really try to immerse yourself into the book, its a good way to try and forget you're locked up. A lot of time the library doesn't have too many good books in it, some jails let you buy books from amazon while you're there, and a lot of time other people in jail have books they'll lend you, or they can reccomend good books that are in the library.
Also try to take some drugs in with you, the jail I went to didn't do cavity searches or anything, you can either swallow them in something and throw up when you get to your cell, or shit it out and get it, or you can shove it in your ass and get it out once you get settled.
But be careful you don't get caught bringing them in or having them, I'm pretty sure it's a felony. You should be good as long as you tell no one you have them, even if they seem cool seriously tell no one.

I am an avid reader, and the jail in my county allows visitors to bring paperbacks for you to read. About sneaking the drugs in, there is no cavity search at this jail either, and last time I was in jail I was high on Diluadid almost the whole time
I'm looking forward to some time away from drugs, as crazy as that may sound. Plus it's not worth the risk of a felony to me

Get a prescription for a sleep-aid that your jail allowa before going in Stuff your butt with drugs if you aren't subject to a cavity search when going in. I'd stash potent stuff like benzos/etizolam, an easy going potent psychedelic, and maybe a potent synthetic cannabinoid for fun (you can eat them)

Actually you'd be surprised. I know there are a lot of streotypes about people in jail, but I met a few awesome people my first time there, and i'm still in contact with one of them.

This is true. The jail i'll be in is not bad at all. It is clean, and not really strict at all. EXTREMELY boring though.Quote:

I struggled with opiate addiction for a few years, and never use them now. I handle my drug use pretty well, but I want to try to stay sober in jail to avoid getting caught with drugs and catching a longer sentence.
Plus, when I get out the first roll or trip that I have will be that much better if i'm not using in jail.

you can always make alcohol with your little fruit juices and white bread. Just add the bread to the juice and let it sit for a week in half and you got pruno. My I ask if it is drug related that you are doing time?

It is a violation of probation for a dirty urine screen. I smoked weed and got a surprise whiz quiz.

I liked having the paper mailed to me every day. Sucked getting a week's worth one day rather than one each day, but it helped me feel closer to the outside.
And rocky, It'll definitely feel better once your out.
I never thought of it til now, but an e-cig with a years worth of liquid is a great thing to anusmuggle in, too

Yes my original arrest was drug related. The reason it's such a long sentence for failing a urine screen is because I have a young probation officer with little experience, and she must think that by being a hardass she can get high fives from her coworkers.

7 months for Marijuana. Damn, you're a hardened criminal. Nice to know you'll be locked away.
Just kidding, that sucks man. But why the fuck would you smoke weed while you're on probation I can sort of understand if you're a straight up junkie or something, but is weed worth you're freedom to some people?

Well bro your a true POW in this fucked up war on drugs.Defiantly sending good vibes your way I find your situation almost cruel and unusual punishment for such a petty offense. It becoming common knowledge that weed is medicine.

No it really isn't. It was a stupid thing to do. I was rarely getting tested so I thought one time would be alright.
I had a choice of either drug treatment court and the rest of my probation time (2 years) or 7 months in county jail and no probation when I get out. I chose the jail time.

Nope. A county year is only 8 months with good behavior, and some of my previous jail time counts towards that. Thus the 7 months.

Do NOT sleep as much as possible.
That will make your time go slow as shit once you can't sleep anymore.
Work out as much as possible. If you do burpees 6 days a week for the seven months you are there, you will be in the best shape of your life.
If I were you I'd get into trustee pod (if they have that sort of thing there). After a while the guards will start treating you like a human being again instead of livestock. Plus it will help you stay busy. Take advantage of this time man, jail can be a blessing if you really want to collect your head space and refocus yourself. Find some serenity.
Starting a commissary store would keep you busy as well... also will help you meet people. Good luck bro, glad you're going into this with the right mindset

I'm going to try and become a trustee just so I can go outside during the day. I'm also going to give meditation a try. I've always had a closed mind about it, but with all of that free time I may as well try it.

I wouldn't recommend sleeping through the day. Maybe a short (1hr) nap, nothing more. Eventually it will make you more emotional and disrupt any & all sleep, so you'll be waking up through the night.
Seroquel should help a ton, but I'm sure you already know Meditation can be great, definitely couldn't hurt to try

Wrong. You actually have to pay to stay there. You will get a bill when you get out. When i was in jail, it cost $35/day.
Yea when I did my month I got charged like 1600 bucks or some shit.

Some places charge, some don't, and some charge people based on where you live.
My county used to do it like this, if you live in the city the jail is in you don't have to pay because your local taxes already payed for it or something, but if you lived somewhere else it's something like $35/a day. They stopped doing this though, probably because no one ever paid.

keep a dream journal
also you should look into kundalini yoga, tai chi, meditation, etc.
ive never been to jail, but these things i find are very good for keeping sanity
physical health is important, and so is psychological health. yoga and tai chi will do wonders for both, and meditating would most definitely prevent insanity.
keeping a dream journal will unlock inner creativity, and broaden your imagination. as will reading, and writing just about anything. drawing, etc.
dont let the system kill your inspiration. think of it as a personal retreat, a whole 7 months of self-reflection and reevaluation.
dont forget to love. never forget to love. love everyone, friends as well as enemies.
love is that which enables choice. love is always stronger than fear. always choose on the basis of love, not fear.
stand up for yourself in the face of fear, but always follow your heart. we are all connected through heart

First thing to do is get a radio, accept that you will probably have to listen to some crappy music. Its still music though, you can also listen to the news this way. Play spades (everyone does it, lots of other cards games too. Good way to BS with people and kill time. Exercise A LOT Watch TV Read Talk to people, try to socialize with everyone that seems cool. Great place to find connections for when you get out. Try to figure out what you want to eat each week off commissary, coffee was essential for me as were snacks. Its easy to spend $100 a week on food, though if you don't have it you can get by on $10 a week pretty easily.
When I was locked up I really didn't read too much cause I thought I was going to be there for like 2 weeks which ended up taking like 3 months. Also their was no library and I was happy listening to the radio and exercising. Its boring, but time goes by fast in a really slow way. Just figure out a routine and the time will go back, just try to make the most out of it. You pretty much spend the entire day waiting to eat food that tastes like shit. Little things during the day take up a few hours, its really hard to fill the entire day up with shit. Eventually you will have down time and down time in jail sucks.
I was talking to someone in jail the last time I got locked up and he told me how he told the nurses he was bipolar are prescribed to 300 mgs of Seroquel per day and did 7 months awake for like 6 hours a day and drugged out of his mind during that period of time. If I ever get locked up again, I will try that.

Rape is more of a prison thing.
And that varies greatly from state to state prison to prison. Some places its really common. I would be scared shitless of getting locked up in Alabama.

Lol the jail in my county has (no joke!) Bob Barker soap. It smells awful, and makes your face break out. Also, on the back of Bob Barker soap, one of the inactive ingredients is: Soap.

i might be able to help... ive been locked up a few times...
you are right, reading and writing does help with a few hours out of the day, but its not gonna keep you "busy". one thing you have no control over, but can make or break your stay is your celly. if you got a chill dude to stay with, time will pass beautifully. swappin stories and shit can kill so much time. ive always shared my stay with people who had it made on the outside and would hook me up with all sorts of shit.
also, try to chill with everyone. make friends. conversation makes time fly as well.
use the resources given to stir shit up. figure out your rights and see what it is they are and are not biding by. healthy "drama" will consume quite a bit of time as well.
sports is coolio too. not sure how big of a jail youre going too.
see about getting into a work program around the jail. ive gotten the 3 for 1 a couple times. every 1 day counts as 3. you get out quicker and youre working. flying of the time.
own up to some of your skills and sell it. i knew a guy that would sell drawings for food and drugs. shit blew my mind. i remember one drawing he did of this guy. he wanted his face on spider man, but breaking out of jail. shit was crazy. dude got a bunch of pills for it.
if you get high, make it your goal to find out who gets what and what they want in trade.
make sure you fill your account with as much money as possible. my jail offers radios and shit in the commissary. one dude had a fucking tv. i know the shits expensive though.
all in all, make your stay like a vacation and make the best of it.

OP if you need someone to keep in correspondence with I would be happy to write you... I'm an avid reader and writer and my interests and hobbies pretty much run the gamut so I'm sure we could find something to talk about.
PM me your contact information there. Either way, I'm sending you good vibes and wish your stay is as quick and easy as can be...
Unfortunate to see so many needless casualties of this failed drug war.
Best wishes OP and contact me if you wanna communicate while you're locked up!

In the halfway house I stayed at they would tie dental floss to a kool aid can. Had the screens on the windows detached and would just toss it out the window. Whoever would drop the shit in and they'd reel it up. Called it fishing.
