Growing from produce seeds

I've been eating a lot of vegetables and what not lately and have been trying to grow some of the leftover seeds. I looked up a few videos and it is pretty simple. It seems so simple but for some reason I am getting 0 germination rates with all these seeds. I recently had some jalapenos and green bell peppers. I deseeded them and saved the seeds to dry. I then placed in moist paper towel and into light.
No germination.
wtf? has anyone done this. it makes no sense to me why they aren't sprouting. If I take my cannabis seeds and do this they pop in days.?

I've tried both ways. It is recommended to dry them out. Only 1 day, just left them out overnight in uncovered container.

unless it specifically says "non-GMO" then your getting mansanto seeds (which won't germ because they are terminator seeds and don't produce viable seeds)

It's possible.. We will see if this round doesn't work then they are duds. I'll have to get organic ones I guess to harvest the seeds.

Peppers are almost always picked unripe to remain firm and 'fresh'. The seed in those fruits will be immature and won't germinate no matter how hard you try. It also doesn't matter if it's organic or not, for peppers at least, because they are all picked green. Buy some seeds online, they are cheap, the variety is amazing, and if you buy from a reputable vendor, germination rates will be 100%!

Never grow seeds out of supermarket vegetables/fruits. First off, chances are high that you get fruits that are imported and won't suit your specific climate. Point 2: You never know which strain you get. Most likely a really weak one that is bred for its long shelf life and can only be sustained with chemicals. Lots of them are F1 hybrids and don't set "strain true seed", lots of variations will occur in the seedlings (which isn't necessarily bad ,imo). Point 3 (like someone mentioned): Fruits often get picked immature, immature fruit equals immature seed.
Go and buy some good seeds of a strain you like (that has the traits you want). There are 100times better tasting strains then the supermarket strains, unfortunately the good tasting ones don't have a long shelf life most of the time(pick and eat ). Supermarket cultivars are NOT selected for their taste most of the time. one of the few traits they care about is shelf life, resistance diseases/pests, respondance to the chemicals to fight the pests and yield. Go and buy some elsanta strawberries, one of the major commercial strains(they aren't that great, even when home grown organic). After that come and try my symphonies or one of the heirloom strains. You'll be amazed

Not necessarily true, i have many chili, orange, apple and strawberry plants that all came from fruit that has been GM'd. The apple seeds had germinated inside the fruit!

Sorry, i missed your post in my last, i have had high germ rates and success with many varieties of chili, capsicum and pepper. All were store bought...

Its never true, actually. At least not yet. No crop allowed for commercial production has terminator genes in it. The problem, as said, is most likely because its unripe fruit (like green jalapenos and green bells).
Look to trade or buy heirloom strains if you want flavor and adaptability. If you grow tomatoes make sure to know the difference between determinate and indeterminate.
