Chlorophyllum rhacodes?
    #18950142 - 10/08/13 03:34 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Habitat:
Near/under cedar in shade in urban forest, growing in soil (I'm pretty sure)

Gills:
Off-white (not as white as the flesh of the cap, free

Stem:
15cm long, 13-16mm in diameter, white with light brown patches/areas, even, hollow.

Cap:
6-12cm diameter (larger ones seen in the field), white background with greyish-brown coloring of scales, flesh when cut open is quite white, shaggy/scaly texture, spherical (marshmallow) shape in younger specimens, becoming nicely convex

Spore print color:
Print isn't complete, but it looks white.

Bruising:
Bruises a brownish red.

Cool.  I'd like to try these this year.  I've seen them in the same place for the last three years and now I just found another patch.

Yeah, these don't really look like the Ch. molybdites photos I've seen.  The print still looks white but I guess I'll wait to make sure the print isn't greenish before having a taste.  (They also don't have the snakeskin pattern on the stalk so I don't think they're procera.)

molybdites does not bruise red so I am pretty sure you are in the clear but
yeah make sure.

I don't think they would be growing too readily in the temps you have right now either.

I just found a small patch whilst walking on my lunch break.

C. molybdites is also more of a grassland species.

The op's mushrooms also could be C. brunneum, hard to tell when you cut the stem base off like that...

Spore print is very very white and still no greening in the gills ~6 hours post harvest.  Any doubt that this is Ch. rhacodes?

Yes, unless someone else who knows Chlorophyllum better would like to add their thoughts...but there is 0 doubt that its an edible Chlorophyllum species and not C. molybdites.  I would eat them if the spore print is white.  Try only a small amount the first time, in case you are one of those people who are sensitive to them.  Also, here is a recipe I would recommend with them.
