I don't think I'm fully getting it

I've made a few posts on here but starting out is really not making much sense to me, is it supposed to be this confusing?
I've looked up quite a bit on shrooms and which of them grow in my location/climate, I had made a thread a while ago asking for some tips on where I should go and one user replied (who happened to live in the same area/climate) that he finds most of his stuff on the side of roads by maple trees.
But after that, I've read a post on how finding actives is really simple near golf courses, so I don't know if I want to go to my usual place I've been going to (this very nice forest area by a creek that goes on for a mile or two) but haven't been finding much, or if I should just check out the golf course in town, or even drive around.
The area is Southern MN in the states, and I really wanted to pick something up before a friend of mine visits from out of states and then leaves for quite a while.. If anyone could give me some very large sum of text to read up on, or any sort of helpful tip I'd be thankful

Don't lose hope. You're not missing anything, it *is* supposed to be that difficult. Especially at first. Once you get an established patch and garner the hunting instinct that takes a few years to hone, it will get much easier, but it's always a game of hit or miss. Persistence is the only way. Even as a veteran I may go hunting 5 days in a row for several hours each day before finding what I'm looking for, but known areas can often yield on the first go with a little patience. Undershooting the season is especially frustrating. If you aren't seeing any kind of mushies at all then you are definitely looking in the wrong place (I'm ruling out the time of year, which is easy to over- or under-shoot, but you're about right on time). Keep looking!

you aren't getting specifics because it is against the forum rules to give specifics.
just read the species guides for your location and then study their habitats like crazy and then visit those habitats like crazy.

Listen to the Milkman.
And let that part about "years" really sink into the brain. It takes years.
I have been hunting for about 8 years now and just this last spring season do I feel like I am kinda getting it.
I have been a member here since 06.

http://www.shroomery.org/8461/Which-psilocybin-mushrooms-grow-wild-in-my-area
There are different mushrooms in different habitats, if that helps. You have a Gymnopilus sp., which grows on wood, and that since it has not been given a species name is possibly uncommon, Panaeolus cinctulus, which grows on manure and in manured ground, and Psilocybe semilanceata, which grows in grassland in temperate regions around the world. When the season peaks around now, your best bet is probably P. semilanceata (Liberty Caps). There is lots of information about those here. Good luck!

do you think it would be too difficult to see them if I went to the golf course in the middle of the night? It seems a bit fishy going there in the day. I'm not quite certain how I'd go about that.

Pay for a round of golf and carry a bag of clubs... problem solved.

You are going to look fishy either way. People don't trust mushroom hunters because they expect that you're looking for the psilly ones. You could be a gourmet chef and it wouldn't matter. If you have the right to be there, like if you paid to get in, go during the day. Act like you're looking for golf balls. Actually grab a few and keep them (people really do this). Act indignant if someone get's into your business. It's none of their business what you're doing because most people won't care or won't bother you in the first place, and as a matter of fact you are a mushroom enthusiast who picks all kinds of mushrooms and takes them home to identify them. Buy and bring with you a mushroom ID guide. You're not looking for anything in particular, and you're kinda new to it so you wouldn't know if you had something illegal anyway If you find what you're looking for, or think you have found it, then just throw it in the bag with all the other random mushrooms you found. In fact, I recommend this as an actual practice. You're not pretending to learn about mushrooms, you actually are learning about mushrooms, and some genuine enthusiasm will go a long way. I wasn't interested in other kinds of mushies at first, but after being around them long enough you can't help but be fascinated by all the different kinds. In this case, your story that you're just a nerd picking mushrooms for fun is really the real truth, even the part about not knowing whether you really have anything illegal or not. They don't need to know that you had anything else on your mind (it helps if you don't look like a delinquent. I'm not saying you do, but *if * you do, change that--you know if you look like a stoner, and you know if you can pull nerdy off). Night time, you're less likely to be seen in the first place, but if you are then your mushroom enthusiast story will not fly, and someone will be much more likely to care about what you're doing and call someone to check you out. Yes, it will be harder to see them at night. A full moon helps A LOT, and considering the grass is most certainly manicured they will be easier to spot than in tall grass. Honestly this is another skill that takes some honing. Shrooms aren't hard to spot from a distance in the first place, but after a while you can literally be driving 60 down the highway and when a reddish-white blur flies past you, you will instinctively say to yourself, "there goes a patch of Amanita muscaria. huh." not kidding. This happens to me ALL THE TIME. you will learn to see them from 80 yards in tall grass with relative certainty. Day or night is up to you. trust your gut.

Just went out for an hour this morning on the golf course and it was way too difficult to see anything. I was also told they spray something that prevents shrooms from growing just now so that kinda sucks.
We have an animal sanctuary here which I wonder if it would be worth checking out, there aren't cows or anything but there's a lot of deer and other birds around.
I just don't know if it would be better to look in there or still keep surveying through the forest I usually go through. I've found a small bit of interesting stuff there, but nothing active.

The deer park is a good bet. At this point you're asking quite specific things about locations near you and I do propose you just do your research, get out in the day and post your shots so that you get the most out of the forum.

Walk through neighborhoods that have woodchip mulch. Go!

there happens to be lots of conifers around the animal sanctuary with mulch under them, didnt happen to find anything though.
What I did find was in the forest and I was wondering if I could get an ID, I have a very awful camera so bare with me.

The caps range from light orange to cream, along with the stems. The gills are cream and I found them growing on the side of a tree.

Looks promising for flammulina velutipes, but that is truly a poor picture upon which to be making any judgements.
