Hi,
I would just like some clarifications with regard to the following questions (PF Tek)
1). How do you sanitise vermiculite? I read a few articles saying saturating it with water and then nuking it in the microwave for 5 minutes or baking it at 350 F in the oven for an hour.
2). Does vermiculite have to be wet while microwaving it or baking it? What is the right temperature for baking?
3). Once inoculation is done and the substrate has been fully colonised, can one take a jar break it into many pieces almost close to the size of large pellets and use it for colonising fresh substrate to speed up cultivation and inoculate 10 jars for every single fully colonised jar?
4). What are the advantages of using gypsum and are there any substitutes?
5). Does one need to protect the open holes in a fruiting chamber with cotton?
6). With regard to the placement of CFL lights within the fruiting chamber, will it be okay to place it directly above the cakes? Do these lights create heat? Should they be placed outside the fruiting chamber? How many CFLs should be used for a fruiting chamber?
7). On an average, considering B+, how many mushrooms could one expect from a half pint cake using the PF Tek? How many doses (level 5) can be attained through a cake?
8). Eating fresh or dry, which is preferred by you?
9). What is the best way to store mushrooms? Which technique is according to you the best way to dry mushrooms?
10). Does one need to fan mushrooms if using aquarium stones as a means of air exchange?
11). Is misting required using a common garden sprayer, if using perlite to maintain humidity? What is the best way to provide water to mushrooms?
12). Is the possession of a hygrometer and thermometer absolutely essential?

1. No need to sterilize the verm, you will be sterilizing it all when it is mixed anyways.
2. Never use a microwave for this hobby, they do not sterilize anything.
3. No, but you can break them up and use them as spawn for bulk substrate.
4. Gypsum helps add nutrients, no there is no substitute, no it is not needed.
5. No, we do not use cotton, we use synthetic polyester pillow stuffing, and we only use this in monotub steups, not just in any fruiting chamber.
And it is not used for contam protection as fully colonized cakes/substrates are contam resistant.
The polyfill is used in monotubs to keep the humidity in while still allowing for some fresh air.
6. One 6500K Daylight CFL placed above and off to the side of the chamber is fine.
7. The name given to the group of spores means nothing, expect anywhere from 1-6 dry grams per cake per flush.
8. Dry.
9. In a cool, dry, air tight container.
10. Yes, we do not fan for FAE, we fan after misting to promote evaporation of the water we just applied.
You would still have to manually mist/fan out a PMP.
11. We usually mist using mister bottles, and yes you would still have to mist/fan them manually.
12. Not unless you are planning on building a greenhouse/martha.
They are not needed for Monotubs or SGFC setups.
