contams
    #18949420 - 10/08/13 12:33 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Just before the mushies open up I always get a green mold like thing on my mycellium.  Then after the flush and dunk it goes away.  It does this every time but the mushrooms havent killed me yet.  I was thinking it may be a dehydration thing.

Also I heard that most contams are not too bad for you anyway as the mushies dont take anything from them.

It's not a hydration issue, it is a mold issue.

The green that washes away, those are just spores.

Odds are your pasteurization failed or you had a hidden mold in a jar of spawn.

Most common contaminant molds have white mycelium and it is difficult to distinguish on certain types of media. It was a thorn in my side for quite a while.

Are you using agar for your cultures by chance?

How did you get past it Frank? Just improved your sterile procedures before hand?

I had a long-running issue with molds just after the first harvest. The grains looked great, smelled great. My pasteurization was on point and besides, this was happening with coir, the most contam-resistant of substrates. I finally got fed up and posted about it here.

RR mentioned that the mold is not germinating, growing, and sporulating in a matter of days (post-harvest). He suggested I check my cultures I keep on agar.

Turns out that the green mold was basically "piggybacking" my cube mycelium, enmeshed with each other and almost impossible to distinguish on the pre-mixed MEA I was using at the time.

Flash forward to today, I am just finishing up my "house cleaning" of 26 isolates. I have found that by using different types of agar media, the molds tend to "pop" more or less when they are present. Here is a pic of one such intruder, can you spot him?

So I never, ever use plates that have "fuzzy" patches in the mycelium, I transfer away from that until it is gone. I want a pure culture like Mr. OH-F here:

No im using a culture.  The green only appears when the mushrooms are just about ready for picking and only a tiny bit.

It hasnt killed me yet though.

It doesn't kill you but it does hurt the tubs productivity.

As I said, the green is not sporulating in a few days time. Either your pasteurization is failing or you had a bad spawn jar. If it is happening to everything, across different syringes/cultures, check your sterile procedures and pasteurization.
