theortical question about mycelia
    #1894903 - 09/08/03 03:30 PM (20 years, 6 months ago)

hehe i was thinking, can you when say a jar is 100% colonized, say letts case 90% of that, and cut off 10% and put in a new sterelised jar of subtrate, and this way making the mycelia "live forever".

not forever, but basically, yes. in superclean conditions. better yet, use that piece of cake to spawn something better, like grain, or pasteurised straw.

Works, but after some time the strain will degrade, causing it not to fruit and whatnot. But a couple of times should work perfectly, really. The idea is not really new, though. What you're actualy doing is spawning new substrate with colonized substrate.

Yes. If everything is free of contaminants, you can make transfers.

The mycelium MAY LOSE something the more generations you do. It has been suggested to not excede 3 transfers. But this suggestion relates to COMMERCIAL GROW OPS. With alot less at risk, you can probably go for as many transfers as possible. Stop when you notice a difference in the mycelial health.

ok GREAT! hehe you guys are the best never ending source of information!

i guessed that it hadd something like that, that a limited amount of spores cannot continue to colonize forever. but hay.

how mutch mycelium is requered to start a new colony, say 1 gram material (eg 100mg myceium) or something, or is the amount microscopic, like i think.

my cat is going to get a fully colonized cake then, untill i get myself a pressurecooker, my jars keep getting infekted with mold.
