Allright getting ready to make up some popcorn for grains I also have some wgbr but the popcorn has soaked for 24 hours and I couldn't get anyone to replie to my post on whole grain brown rice so I went to the popcorn as I had read it was easy to work with by some I'm on my third transfer in cond. cups (that's a whole nother story as to why i used those but everything seems cool with the reishi and turkey tail so I'm gonna give it a shot . Now I know this is really no big deal compared to where I'm headed but I had to get my feet wet and this was the most econical solution as to the money and work situation I am in ATM but things will get better! So wish me luck as I only have 10 half pint jars but can get more as I didn't realize the retail stores around here sold them. I guess maybe I should get some quart jars next time idk but I'm heading in for my first attempt at any grain, wish me luck as I'm pretty excited ecspiacially about the reishi don't even know if it will colonize popcorn

Popcorn is a poor choice for spawn. Low nock points, high endo spore counts, popcorn is usually only recommended as a last resort

Go ahead and give it a try. I always like to try things myself before forming opinions on them anyway. I do recommend a minimum 2 hour PC cycle, as popcorn is loaded with endoscopes. As most things go in this hobby, you must always be prepared for the possibility of fail when trying things for the first time.

Don't believe everything you read...including about popcorn.
Popcorn in my experience is good for spawn and its great for starting spores. I've used it thousands of times and so has thousands of other people.
Saying popcorn is inferior is kind of like saying PF tek BRF is bad. Its simply not true. The people dissing popcorn the most, don't even use it and many have never used it.
Popcorn is another good tool in the chest. Done right it's just fine.
Not trying to contradict anyone who doesn't like popcorn, or say its the best... just saying it does the job good.

How long do you pc for pastywhite says 2 hours the tech I read said 60 min. I wish maybe I would have thrown some Vern in with about half but I said fuck it I will follow the tech the only thing I did diff. Was I put dura pore tape on two 1/4 inch holes in disk I also loaded them a little more than 3/4 of the way do you think everything will be cool I also wasn't sure how tight to put lids on so I left most a hair loose I did cover with alum. Foil too.

I love using popcorn for my grows! It doesn't seem to burst the grains when I simmer popcorn on the stove

the result:

I like popcorn allot Less messy than Wild Bird Seed in my opinion.

I have used popcorn more than once. I found that it was easy to hydrate, smelled great and had the illusion of fast colonization. But I also found that I really had to up my sterilization times (2+ hours) or else I ended up with lots of bacteria ridden jars. I also found that it took a long time to see germination compared to other grains. It also took a long time to complete a spawn run, probably due to the low nock points. IMO it cannot compare to rye or wheat, and while its not as messy or tricky to prep as WBS, its high knock points give WBS the edge.
I agree that too many people trash things based on second hand knowledge, I try to not do that for the most part. I am also a big believer in trying things at least once. Something that does not work for others, might just be ideal for you depending on your situation

Does it smell like burnt or cooked popcorn/grains, if so yes that's normal.

Yes but I found a part of the problem the quart jars bottom busted out but the popcorn in the half pint jars are a little darker than when I originally pulled them out of the bag they came in one more I used dura tape ( which held up fine ) on the jars instead of tyvek in the tech it says pull them out and let cool on the counter top or oven I still have the aluminum foil and tape on them also it also said to give a good shake which I did and then put back in oven and then thought I just cont. them maybe not true because of tape and al. Foil?

No one as to did I cont. pulling them out of PC as soon as pressure dropped to shake the grains?I normally would have thrown them in Sab but it has shit in it and the tech said to just set it on the counter but then I realized he had stated to use tyvek, noobie mistake! I still wonder others thoughts on this and the jar busting could that have effected anything corn was lining bottom of PC!

I knocked up the jars lat night with reishi , enoki , and turkey tails like I said they were only half pint jars and I inoculated two of each. I doubled up on the tape and shook the fuck out of them, another noobie mistake I think , because half the popcorn split. I do beleive I shook to hard, as I said this was my first shot at grains, and it was def. a learning experience, now it's wait and see what happens stayed up all night working on this. The one thing I def. noticed was the ease of transfer into jars compared to transferring with scalpel from petri to petri (or in this case soufflé cup to jar but as stated before that's a whole nother story, as to why soufflé cups I have to say they did the job quite well, it was just there was no time to fuck around as every time I hit edges of Petris they cont. so I really had to move quick on these! I also made up another set of transfers on each in soufflé cups, doubling up on that ( just in case)!

Well two of the turkey tail jars got green trich or something green, just a little bit right now as it is no big deal for me to get more of t.t., should I toss the grains and can I save the jars, I kind of wanted to see what the turkey tail mycelium would do about this but I would rather save the jars, if I can, if so what do I do to clean the jars?
