Anyone do the paleo diet here?

I'm a long time mostly raw, whole foods vegan who (after health issues and terrible bloodwork from my doctor) has finally taken the plunge into eating meat again, for the long term.
It's been a week or two and I feel FANTASTIC!
I only eat fruit, coconuts, veggies, greens, tubers, eggs, meat and fish.
I really like organ meats like liver also, as I am extremely low in vitamin A and am trying to build my levels up again.
I probably eat too much fruit still (I was a straight up fruitarian for several years) but I still like it and I like to do a lot of cardio so fruit makes good fuel for biking and running. I've drastically cut back on it though...mostly just citrus.
I like 2-3 pastured eggs a day, usually hardboiled.
I do bone broths too, from chicken and fish bones. Love chicken bone broth. I tried a beef bone broth but I couldn't stomach it. Although I am finding I do enjoy a grassfed steak at least once or twice a week.
For fish I like wild salmon and sardines and shellfish, like mussels. LOVE mussels. I am wary of mercury in water so I am cautious about eating big fish. But I do love seafood.
I do a lot of kale and broccoli, and romaine salads. Olives sometimes.
Anyone else do paleo? How do YOU do it? What I like about it is how versatile it is. For me the KEY is getting high quality, fresh local grassfed and pastured animal products and making sure I get my fruits and veggies in too.
Oh, and I eat A LOT of coconut meat.

Yeah, imagine that, eating a food source that gives you all the nutrients you need makes you feel better.

Paleo has been a pretty big trend here on the mainland for a while among the crossfit crew. There's websites galore with recipes abound. I'm interested in digging into it, but finding recipes online is annoying as each website seems to run slower than the last as their only revenue stream is incessant ads.

I don't normally follow diets, but i really liked the principle that the paleo diet is based on; and 'the paleo solution' was very informative. I've been trying to follow it, and in fact i lost 3 kgs in a month. I'm not overweight, and wasn't trying to loose weight. I've slacked off recently and have been back into old (bad) habits for the last two weeks while out partying. I'm getting out of party mode again now though and will be resuming Paleo. I've been able to cut out grains very easily as i didn't eat a lot of grain foods previously. Pizza is my biggest grain food temptation, but it's not a problem. Dairy on the other hand is a completely different story. I love chocolate and ice cream and cows milk. Ice cream i can hold back on; and have even made my own from coconut milk a few times; but chocolate is pretty hard for me. I've bought vegan chocolate which is quite nice, and helps; but it's not as nice as ordinary dairy milk ect. Working on it though.

You know what, I was interested in it and gungho on it for a little bit, although I have since come to realize that it is a bit of fad diet which isn't based on much. It is a very loose idea which appeals to those of us trying to avoid the "necessary evils" of modern lifestyle.
Besides that I don't know the facts well enough to shoot the shit, but i've made up my mind that it's not for me.
That said, there are some great paleo baking recipes out there, and the paleo crowd seems to be alive and well on pinterest.
The only observation I can offer is: For long distance endurance running and cycling, I require grains and pasta.

I KNOW right?? I was into the veggie diets for so long I forgot what it felt like to feel good. And I was a healthful vegan/vegetarian too, logging everything in chronometer to see my macro and micronutrients, gluten free, only eating whole foods, etc. But there are some nutrients in animal products that are hard to get in plant foods. Like some people don't convert beta carotene into Vitamin A, for example, and that's why they fail to thrive as a vegan or vegetarian. I'm one of these people.
It was pretty hard for me to start eating animal foods again, but I was convinced when I started having fertility, skin, hair and bloodwork issues. I'm a mom and want to give my son and future children the best start they possibly can have, too. So putting my personal preferences aside, I decided to try my own version of paleo (I can't do low-carb yet).

Yeah, I don't do recipes. I'm not really a recipe person. The most complex thing I do is chicken bone broth with chopped livers with kale and sweet potato. Easy. I only really get "fancy" like this at night. The rest of the day it's fruit, salad, eggs, coconut... and fish, if I have it or want it.

Yeah, my whole body composition is changing!! I didn't need to lose any weight but my clothes are getting looser and my muscles more obvious! I thought for sure I would gain weight eating animal foods but so far the opposite thing is happening. Time will tell! I'm going to give it a solid month and reevaluate but I do feel pretty awesome nourishing myself this way.

Yeah I know, that's why I still eat a lot of fruit, for fuel during cardio excursions. Or sweet potatoes. I can't do low carb yet. I also found out that grains (even gluten free ones!) were giving me horrible inflammation and irritating my skin! Since cutting out all grains I have stopped breaking out completely and my skin is so soft and smooth, it's crazy!! I never thought I would have good skin again! It was just getting worse and worse as a veggie. I'm so psyched to be healing my skin, it's a real confidence booster for me.
And I found the premise behind paleo pretty sound...and not fad at all, more ancestral. Have you ever heard of the Weston A Price foundation/Nourishing Traditions? I've read a lot of that research and that's what helped me make the leap into this way of eating. I've also been studying the diets of known hunter gatherer tribes who are in superior health and learning a lot!
So far so good...everything is an experiment of course. But I am very pleased. I love working out again! I love doing dishes! I finally have the energy I remember having from being way younger. It's pretty neat!
Paleo is VERY VERY flexible and versatile...I don't think any two people will do it the same way! That's why I like it. I think if people are just shoveling meat in constantly, especially if it's factory farmed, then paleo probably sucks. But a good balance of fruits and veggies with high quality meat and fish is yielding great results for me right now. I'm excited about it! The best part is that it's possible to eat 100% LOCAL if I eat paleo. I love that too.

Here's an article written by a raw vegan who claims that vegan diets are insufficient without supplementation. He actually claims all diets are insufficient without supplementation and he chalks it up to the current state of the world and evolution: http://www.treeoflife.nu/DRCOUSENS/DRCOUSENSBLOG/tabid/364/language/en-US/~/Default.aspx?tabid=364&PostID=114&language=en-US
There are nutrients that can only be obtained from animal products, but from what I currently know, a diet that includes high quality meats is no more healthy than a diet that includes high quality milk products (fish oil isn't needed for DHA; DHA is found in the right milk products as well). In fact, the latter diet may be better because meat possesses inferior digestibility and negatively affects the bacterial aspect in one's body.
Eventually it may be possible to be completely vegan without using any animal products -- with the help of science. From the article above: "At this time, we don’t have a really good vegan source of vitamin A, but we’re in the process of developing one. What’s missing is a particular enzyme that converts beta-carotene into retinol."

I take issue with the milk statement, personally.
Unfortunately milk makes me break out, even raw milk. I also can't seem to digest it, as I get diarrhea and cramping in my bowels. Meat however digests perfectly fine as long as I stop when my body tells me that's enough. 8 years without meat and I went back to it without a single bit of indigestion. Whereas even a cup of raw or pasteurized milk will give me problems.
At this point I'm listening 100% to my body.
Although my body might lead me back to a vegan diet at some point, I'm not discounting the possibility. During my reproductive years however, definitely not.

I've heard that the issue with milk are usually caused by the multitudes of bad problems with dairy production. Not even gonna go into that. You say you've had raw milk, but was it truly good quality and truly raw? In any case, I think that butter and whey are more important. Let's say even the best milk gives you issues. Still can't write off those two milk derivatives until you try them. Both are very nutritionally dense and they serve as sources for complete protein*, vitamin A, DHA, vitamin D, vitamin K2, etc.. *(not butter)
I wasn't talking about indigestion when I criticized meat's digestibility. I was talking about how it simply won't pass through the body anywhere near as quickly as, for example, a diet consisting largely of fruit and whey.

I was able to visit the farm I got the milk from...they are right down the road. I live in Hawaii and the goats and cows at this particular farm are incredibly well cared for, feasting on beautiful green grass and fallen fruit year round. My body just doesn't like milk! Or any dairy. I don't know why that's hard to understand. We are all individuals and what works for one person will not work for all. I also don't care for butter, for the same reasons. (skin problems)

What about yogurt, does that give you the same problem? Lots of people that can't do dairy, can do yogurt and kefir, because of the probiotics. you tried kefir?

Basically a completely carnivorous paleolithic diet... not sure there's a "diet phrase" for that one
http://www.vice.com/read/this-guy-has-eaten-nothing-but-raw-meat-for-five-years
That guy's girlfriend is a vegetarian. Apparently his body just can't process carbs. We're all slightly different.. I can't imagine a life without carbs.

that's hilarious. the paleolithic "odd-couple"
i can't imagine my colon's disdain after eating so much raw meat, really. plus, without carbs wouldn't one just feel like a spec of dust? i dunno. but it surprised me when i heard of this, thankfully now, he's just on a regular diet of some sort.

It may sound weird as shit to us,.. but he found out what works for him, so that's cool. That's why I never subscribed to these "one size fits all" diets.. We are all humans so there are the same general guidelines to follow.. but there can be drastic differences in body chemistry resulting in drastically different diets.. you just have to find what works best for you. My GF thought she was allergic to gluten/wheat for years, turned out not to be that at all.

well, i guess what i'm wondering is why the hell my friend was changing his diet all the time. maybe he thought one or another would help clear his mind or something... does any particular diet help with nourishment of the brain? that would be interesting.
all i know about is don't mix your greens with meat, and you colon-y type of stuff.
but yeah, to each their own, i'm just curious... the notion that we are what we eat; that what we eat influences us so much, is fascinating.

Some people just do that, to experiment and find what works best for them. Once you find something that clicks you tend to stick with it.

that's why it's so fascinating. i wanna do something like that, but... i just find switching things up enough that things don't boring, to be a pretty cool deal. i don't hardly get sick, and rarely ever have any gas or digestion problems, other then from soda, or chocolate.
or not eating breakfast. simple stuff, i guess.

well either way, I think it's important to try to have a variety of things in your diet.. you don't want to be eating the same shit all the time. Not just with getting bored with the same flavors all the time but also maybe filling in nutritional gaps you may be missing with a particular diet.. so switching things up can be good for a number of reasons.

yeah, i know, that's why i kinda insist on it. but also, for the different flavors too. unfortunately the situation i am in, right now, i can't afford to eat out or buy fickle things to make the right kinda concoction for a salad or anything. everything now is soup, and lots of soup, and lots of frozen steak, and rice.

I think the breaking out is due to a bad reaction to hormones that are inside milk. Many cows are given hormones, and those hormones cross the blood-brain-barrier which means that a significant amount would be transferred into the breast milk.
Even if the cow was raised under "organic" conditions and given no hormones, consider the fact that cows are milked while they are pregnant. Dairy farms always want to keep the cow pregnant, because it: A) Always keeps them producing milk, and B) Will add another calf into the family that they can either sell for meat or raise for more dairy. So even if it has not been given artificial hormones, the fact that they are kept in a constant state of pregnancy means they will be producing high amounts of hormones naturally, which then transfer to breast milk,.
I believe this is why some people, such as myself, have an adverse reaction to milk, and break out (quite badly I should also add) whenever they consume it.

I'd really be interested to see if you guys that can't handle milk or cheese at all, can do Kefir.. you should look into it. I've talked to numerous people whose bodies cannot handle milk/cheese/ice cream at all, but CAN handle kefir due to all the enzymes and probiotic bacteria. There's a lot of positive health effects associated with it as well.

After more then a week doing my own version of paleo...I am feeling so amazing. My energy levels are truly soaring. And I am only eating meat once a day. Twice on rare days. I still eat a plant-based diet, still lots of fruit and salads. I want to model my diet after the great apes, who eat a large amount of greens, fruits if they can find them, insects, eggs, honey and meat if they can get it.
It's the diet that makes the most sense to me, honestly.
I really love the local idea of eating also...on my island food that is shipped in is hella expensive!! I never felt good about eating grains/rice/quinoa shipped in to the island, felt very unsustainable not to mention that ANY grains give me almost unbearable inflammation (I can really feel the difference now that I cut them out). I like how I can eat meat and have it be local, sustainable and healthy here in Hawaii, but it might not be that way in other states.
I really should try some local wild-shot pig...haven't gotten into ham yet though. Mostly fish and chicken, with occasional beef.
REALLY digging the way I am feeling!!! I can't stop working out, it's all I want to do now. I have MISSED having energy like this!!

There's a lot of positive health effects associated with it as well.
I can handle cheese just fine. I think when milk is fermented, it breaks down the primary lactose chain, so people who are lactose intolerant usually can handle cheese just fine.

Interesting to note:
I just finished "The road cyclists training bible" by Joe Friel. This book is considered the authority on competitive cycle training. It surprised me to see that Friel recommends a moderate paleo diet. Perhaps i'll look into it a bit further.
I was initially turned off because it seemed anti-fruit, anti-carb.

I'm also skeptical of anybody who doesn't eat fruit. I don't care what anybody says, fruit is good for you. Fruit is rich with antioxidants and vitamins. Somebody who eats too much fruit is probably going to live longer than somebody who eats too much meat.

I still LOVE fruit. Love it. And as an athlete or even just someone who exercises regularly, fruit and sweet potatoes are key. You naturally eat lower carb when you cut out the processed carbs, including wheat. Fruit is a friendly carb. As long as you don't eat too much of it! (as a former fruitarian, I definitely know what "too much fruit" is...lol)
Going on 2 weeks now with paleo and feeling AMAZING! Yesterday I had pastured eggs, coconuts, some tangelos, a big salad with avocado, and fish with steamed broccoli. Yummy. I feel so well nourished and cravings are a thing of the past.

I am with my girlfriends family the past few days, and have eaten sooo many bread products, and feel like shit and it's fucked up my bowel movements.
Apparently 3 weeks is the minimum time limit that should be given before passing judgement on the efficacy of a change in diet.

I thought the same thing! Little did I know how much those two items were contributing to my bloat and inflammation! And I gotta say...since I upped the animal products, I don't miss or crave any grains at all.
Today I ate: 2 coconuts, 3 eggs, a big green salad, handful of olives, macadamia nuts, and tonight is grassfed beef wrapped up in lettuce leaves.
My body fat is going way down and my muscle definition is going up...I'm shocked. Pretty cool!

that just doesn't seem like enough calories to get through the day to me....your posts have piqued my interest though, because I have inflammation issues as well - pretty much my whole digestive system up into my sinuses according to my GI doc & ENT, but they can't really say what's causing it. it doesn't really manifest into any skin issues, but i definitely notice my skin glows when i go off gluten, most dairy, and sugar.
i guess if i went COMPLETELY off grains, I would need to increase my intake of starchy veggies, at least at first....

Yeah, I often question if I am eating enough myself for my activity level. I am currently biking 10 miles a day plus doing body weight exercise for an hour every night, plus running after my toddler and still nursing! Seems like I'm burning a lot of calories!
But I feel so full and satiated from the food I eat and seem to have a lot of energy that calorie intake doesn't seem to be an issue right now. I eat when I'm hungry and stop when I'm full...and don't get hungry for awhile. I don't really have blood sugar crashes anymore either! Or cravings! When I was a vegan I would eat and eat and EAT...I literally couldn't get enough food. But now that I'm focusing on dense foods, I seem to be way more satisfied on much smaller amounts.
Coconut is also VERY filling..I'm not sure how many calories a whole semi-mature coconut has, but it has to be a lot as it fills me up and keeps me going for awhile!
Yeah, the reason why I decided to try this new diet change is because I had health problems plus AWFUL bloodwork from my doctor. He told me I had to change what I was doing...so I thought...well...I guess I should try a whole-foods paleo diet and see what happens! It made intuitive sense to me so here I am.
I also ate A LOT of fruit and potatoes in my transition...now however I don't feel the need for as many carbs at all. It's weird, I used to be a carboholic!!

akira_akuma said: well, i guess what i'm wondering is why the hell my friend was changing his diet all the time. maybe he thought one or another would help clear his mind or something... does any particular diet help with nourishment of the brain? that would be interesting.
all i know about is don't mix your greens with meat, and you colon-y type of stuff.
but yeah, to each their own, i'm just curious... the notion that we are what we eat; that what we eat influences us so much, is fascinating.
Nourish the brain? so you want to feel better?
I read stickies over at bodybuilding.com, and they are really solid. losing weight helps alot also. But I got most of my nutrition and diet by continously trying, and trying, and trying. Overtime, i find myself having alot of healthy foods to make up my calories instead of the same things that i eat over an over, given some things i do eat over and over because i dont mind it honestly, but ill skip a day here and there. So this is a little like learning how to play a game. the only thing people might shun me for, is that i like 100% natural juice. I eat healthy enough that its hard to get all my carbs down so apple juice/orange juice/berry juice i have 16 ounces/2cups of these a day and it helps with the carbs.
Im HUGE on smoothies. I dont see how people do it without blenders. I know pro athletes use them alot, some dont of course, whatever works for you. Lol, ill throw a protein scoop, a handful of spinach/lettuce/collard greens, a serving of hemp seeds (or chia seeds or flax seeds, sometimes two of these) a serving of oats, coconut water, and sometimes a tablespoon of olive oil in, a serving of matcha green tea, and some water, or ill drink water on the side, sometimes a banana, or other fruits like berries. and then right there is probably the healthiest shake out there.. it gets me goin in the morning - if your going from fastfood/yourmomcooking to this though you might need to adjust, but generally speaking it has a peanutbuttery flavor for some reason, then again my protein is chocolate peanutbutter.
So if your one of those people who hate eat salad and veggies like i do, just throw them in with a bunch of other things and blend them up. now that i realize how useful the blender is with eating tons of veggies while not looking like im about to kill someone eating them, im probably goingto add a shit-ton more veggies to my diet. finally i can eat and reap the benefits of things like raw broccoli!
key things for my healthy takeover and lifestyle changing is where i got my carbs and fats from. protein is simple, i usually cycle with grilled chicken being my main protein source, eggs usually a every other day thing, and organic ground turkey i shape into burgers and add some spices too. and then ill throw steak/fish every now and then in there. but again carbs, i use 100 percent whole wheat bread or ezekiel bread, same with wraps, veggies/fruits, brown rice, quinoa, juices seem to be the main sources. for fats, i eat with seeds/nuts/oils. mostly seeds and oils lately, but sometimes ill add nuts like pistachios/almonds. the amount of nutrition im recieving would be on a olympic athletes level, considering i got most of my information from coaches of olympic athletes and pro athletes, as well as some friends who bodybuild, but mostly from my own research.
so i do have some variety, and some staple foods i eat nearly everyday but switch out every now an then. why change whats working?
honestly, i gave you alot of information that will tremendously help your thinking power bodys strength... I forgot to add, a diet rich with nutrients/antioxidants, vitamins, complete proteins (all amino acid profile) is a fuckton better than average diet.

regarding the paleo diet. i Personally don't like it.
But some people swear by it. i would deff do research on all the different types of seeds out there because there is alot and they are primarily fat/protein. as well as nuts, and as well as different types of oils. i dont see how people eat grilled chicken without bread/or some type of carb to mix up the taste..,
but again, bodybuilding.com has more experienced members there, and alot that use it, that post pictures of themselves have great bodies!

I'm curious about what there is not to like about the paleo diet for you? Perhaps you could clarify? I am finding paleo to be extremely flexible! One could eat more plant-based or go heavier on the animal foods. I guess if you love to eat grains it's not the diet for you, haha.

The paleo diet does not stop a person from consuming seeds and nuts. Seeds and nuts are fine. Grains come from grasses. As for oils, although lard seems to be the preference of the community, personally i'm happy to consume most oils, as long as they don't contain trans fats.

I eat tons of coconut, just not the meat. They have them at the grocery store, but I feel like I would need a machete to open them.
I eat coconut everything else, though. Feels so good in my body. In a couple of weeks after I'm completely detoxed off alcohol & coffee, I might give it a shot cutting out all grains, to see how it feels....Willing to try almost everything at this point to get my body feeling vibrant & vital again!

Its not that i love to eat grains, but grilled chicken alone, seasoned, just does not do it for me, i cant eat eggs alone either, same with turkey lol. i would be forcing these things down. fish i can eat alone but that is unrealistic, i can't eat to much fish to begin with. there are a few more flaws that apply to me. One being my body and its past injuries, i believe vegetables and fruit help rejuvenate me and reduce inflamation. i also tend to feel quite amazing after eating vegetables. its like almost like a warm sugary rush but not stimulating, a clear mentality i get when i drink my smoothies loaded with veggies/healthy carbs. I tend to look up to star athletes also being a former athlete, i like to model my diet after them because i know they're working with top of the line nutritionist. Gary Johnson is a great influence on me, he was a nhl player with a great story

could be wrong, last time i checked there was a 1 day carb up a week, and only 20-25 calories worth of food from carbs you can eat. That is not enough for me to get the amount of fruits/veggies i eat daily. i heard you might feel more energy, but i dont think that is regarding strength at all, but mentally. so not strength or else the paleo would be a ton more popular the strength training world. i remember reading something from bodybuilding.com regarding it, this was awhile ago though. an example to why its not enough carbs i can eat daily- 1 large banana, which is the most typical, atleast around here, ranges from 25-35 carbs.
and hold up, i might be confusing the paleo diet with a Keto diet? i did research on the Keto Diet, i always associated paleo with keto.
But i entirely agree, i enjoy my esezkiel/whole wheat sandwiches with lettuce and banana peppers/grilled chicken way to much!

Fruit is underrated by Paleo in my opinion. Three good juicy pieces a day fits the bill. Otherwise I like the diet.

They are different. Paleo seems to be more of a philosophy. You can go into ketosis with a paleo diet, but that's only if one wants to get really really cut and lean. Not recommended for the average person. I keep my carbs around 100 grams a day usually. But you can always do more and have it still be paleo. The point is just to consume carbs which are in alignment with a paleo philosophy, such as tubers (potatoes), veggies, and fruits.

You find the most paleo folks among the crossfit crowd, rather then the body-building crowd.
I have never done crossfit but all of my paleo friends are into it.

Not right now...though if I did I would up my sweet potatoes or fruit. I am extremely active during each day as well but don't seem to crave carbs.
