MOTH said: After more then a week doing my own version of paleo...I am feeling so amazing. My energy levels are truly soaring. And I am only eating meat once a day. Twice on rare days. I still eat a plant-based diet, still lots of fruit and salads. I want to model my diet after the great apes, who eat a large amount of greens, fruits if they can find them, insects, eggs, honey and meat if they can get it.
It's the diet that makes the most sense to me, honestly.
I really love the local idea of eating also...on my island food that is shipped in is hella expensive!! I never felt good about eating grains/rice/quinoa shipped in to the island, felt very unsustainable not to mention that ANY grains give me almost unbearable inflammation (I can really feel the difference now that I cut them out). I like how I can eat meat and have it be local, sustainable and healthy here in Hawaii, but it might not be that way in other states.
I really should try some local wild-shot pig...haven't gotten into ham yet though. Mostly fish and chicken, with occasional beef.
REALLY digging the way I am feeling!!! I can't stop working out, it's all I want to do now. I have MISSED having energy like this!!
I want to feel that way!!!
I don't know what I would do without at LEAST quinoa & oatmeal though.....
I thought the same thing! Little did I know how much those two items were contributing to my bloat and inflammation! And I gotta say...since I upped the animal products, I don't miss or crave any grains at all.
Today I ate: 2 coconuts, 3 eggs, a big green salad, handful of olives, macadamia nuts, and tonight is grassfed beef wrapped up in lettuce leaves.
My body fat is going way down and my muscle definition is going up...I'm shocked. Pretty cool!

that just doesn't seem like enough calories to get through the day to me....your posts have piqued my interest though, because I have inflammation issues as well - pretty much my whole digestive system up into my sinuses according to my GI doc & ENT, but they can't really say what's causing it. it doesn't really manifest into any skin issues, but i definitely notice my skin glows when i go off gluten, most dairy, and sugar.
i guess if i went COMPLETELY off grains, I would need to increase my intake of starchy veggies, at least at first....

Yeah, I often question if I am eating enough myself for my activity level. I am currently biking 10 miles a day plus doing body weight exercise for an hour every night, plus running after my toddler and still nursing! Seems like I'm burning a lot of calories!
But I feel so full and satiated from the food I eat and seem to have a lot of energy that calorie intake doesn't seem to be an issue right now. I eat when I'm hungry and stop when I'm full...and don't get hungry for awhile. I don't really have blood sugar crashes anymore either! Or cravings! When I was a vegan I would eat and eat and EAT...I literally couldn't get enough food. But now that I'm focusing on dense foods, I seem to be way more satisfied on much smaller amounts.
Coconut is also VERY filling..I'm not sure how many calories a whole semi-mature coconut has, but it has to be a lot as it fills me up and keeps me going for awhile!
Yeah, the reason why I decided to try this new diet change is because I had health problems plus AWFUL bloodwork from my doctor. He told me I had to change what I was doing...so I thought...well...I guess I should try a whole-foods paleo diet and see what happens! It made intuitive sense to me so here I am.
I also ate A LOT of fruit and potatoes in my transition...now however I don't feel the need for as many carbs at all. It's weird, I used to be a carboholic!!

akira_akuma said: well, i guess what i'm wondering is why the hell my friend was changing his diet all the time. maybe he thought one or another would help clear his mind or something... does any particular diet help with nourishment of the brain? that would be interesting.
all i know about is don't mix your greens with meat, and you colon-y type of stuff.
but yeah, to each their own, i'm just curious... the notion that we are what we eat; that what we eat influences us so much, is fascinating.
Nourish the brain? so you want to feel better?
I read stickies over at bodybuilding.com, and they are really solid. losing weight helps alot also. But I got most of my nutrition and diet by continously trying, and trying, and trying. Overtime, i find myself having alot of healthy foods to make up my calories instead of the same things that i eat over an over, given some things i do eat over and over because i dont mind it honestly, but ill skip a day here and there. So this is a little like learning how to play a game. the only thing people might shun me for, is that i like 100% natural juice. I eat healthy enough that its hard to get all my carbs down so apple juice/orange juice/berry juice i have 16 ounces/2cups of these a day and it helps with the carbs.
Im HUGE on smoothies. I dont see how people do it without blenders. I know pro athletes use them alot, some dont of course, whatever works for you. Lol, ill throw a protein scoop, a handful of spinach/lettuce/collard greens, a serving of hemp seeds (or chia seeds or flax seeds, sometimes two of these) a serving of oats, coconut water, and sometimes a tablespoon of olive oil in, a serving of matcha green tea, and some water, or ill drink water on the side, sometimes a banana, or other fruits like berries. and then right there is probably the healthiest shake out there.. it gets me goin in the morning - if your going from fastfood/yourmomcooking to this though you might need to adjust, but generally speaking it has a peanutbuttery flavor for some reason, then again my protein is chocolate peanutbutter.
So if your one of those people who hate eat salad and veggies like i do, just throw them in with a bunch of other things and blend them up. now that i realize how useful the blender is with eating tons of veggies while not looking like im about to kill someone eating them, im probably goingto add a shit-ton more veggies to my diet. finally i can eat and reap the benefits of things like raw broccoli!
key things for my healthy takeover and lifestyle changing is where i got my carbs and fats from. protein is simple, i usually cycle with grilled chicken being my main protein source, eggs usually a every other day thing, and organic ground turkey i shape into burgers and add some spices too. and then ill throw steak/fish every now and then in there. but again carbs, i use 100 percent whole wheat bread or ezekiel bread, same with wraps, veggies/fruits, brown rice, quinoa, juices seem to be the main sources. for fats, i eat with seeds/nuts/oils. mostly seeds and oils lately, but sometimes ill add nuts like pistachios/almonds. the amount of nutrition im recieving would be on a olympic athletes level, considering i got most of my information from coaches of olympic athletes and pro athletes, as well as some friends who bodybuild, but mostly from my own research.
so i do have some variety, and some staple foods i eat nearly everyday but switch out every now an then. why change whats working?
honestly, i gave you alot of information that will tremendously help your thinking power bodys strength... I forgot to add, a diet rich with nutrients/antioxidants, vitamins, complete proteins (all amino acid profile) is a fuckton better than average diet.

regarding the paleo diet. i Personally don't like it.
But some people swear by it. i would deff do research on all the different types of seeds out there because there is alot and they are primarily fat/protein. as well as nuts, and as well as different types of oils. i dont see how people eat grilled chicken without bread/or some type of carb to mix up the taste..,
but again, bodybuilding.com has more experienced members there, and alot that use it, that post pictures of themselves have great bodies!

I'm curious about what there is not to like about the paleo diet for you? Perhaps you could clarify? I am finding paleo to be extremely flexible! One could eat more plant-based or go heavier on the animal foods. I guess if you love to eat grains it's not the diet for you, haha.
Yeah, green smoothies! I used to LOVE green smoothies! But I no longer have electricity where I live in the jungle. Just a propane stove and basic cutlery. So just salads for me.

Thought about getting a decent solar setup for some electricity? Solar has come a LONG way in the past couple years and made some amazing advances in efficiency, and is a lot cheaper than it used to be. ..that is assuming you get any direct sun in your jungle.

The paleo diet does not stop a person from consuming seeds and nuts. Seeds and nuts are fine. Grains come from grasses. As for oils, although lard seems to be the preference of the community, personally i'm happy to consume most oils, as long as they don't contain trans fats.

I eat tons of coconut, just not the meat. They have them at the grocery store, but I feel like I would need a machete to open them.
I eat coconut everything else, though. Feels so good in my body. In a couple of weeks after I'm completely detoxed off alcohol & coffee, I might give it a shot cutting out all grains, to see how it feels....Willing to try almost everything at this point to get my body feeling vibrant & vital again!

yes, which is why i told the OP to research on seeds/nuts/oils. coconut manna is my newest addition to my regimen. although im not on the paleo.

Its not that i love to eat grains, but grilled chicken alone, seasoned, just does not do it for me, i cant eat eggs alone either, same with turkey lol. i would be forcing these things down. fish i can eat alone but that is unrealistic, i can't eat to much fish to begin with. there are a few more flaws that apply to me. One being my body and its past injuries, i believe vegetables and fruit help rejuvenate me and reduce inflamation. i also tend to feel quite amazing after eating vegetables. its like almost like a warm sugary rush but not stimulating, a clear mentality i get when i drink my smoothies loaded with veggies/healthy carbs. I tend to look up to star athletes also being a former athlete, i like to model my diet after them because i know they're working with top of the line nutritionist. Gary Johnson is a great influence on me, he was a nhl player with a great story

could be wrong, last time i checked there was a 1 day carb up a week, and only 20-25 calories worth of food from carbs you can eat. That is not enough for me to get the amount of fruits/veggies i eat daily. i heard you might feel more energy, but i dont think that is regarding strength at all, but mentally. so not strength or else the paleo would be a ton more popular the strength training world. i remember reading something from bodybuilding.com regarding it, this was awhile ago though. an example to why its not enough carbs i can eat daily- 1 large banana, which is the most typical, atleast around here, ranges from 25-35 carbs.
and hold up, i might be confusing the paleo diet with a Keto diet? i did research on the Keto Diet, i always associated paleo with keto.
But i entirely agree, i enjoy my esezkiel/whole wheat sandwiches with lettuce and banana peppers/grilled chicken way to much!

Fruit is underrated by Paleo in my opinion. Three good juicy pieces a day fits the bill. Otherwise I like the diet.

They are different. Paleo seems to be more of a philosophy. You can go into ketosis with a paleo diet, but that's only if one wants to get really really cut and lean. Not recommended for the average person. I keep my carbs around 100 grams a day usually. But you can always do more and have it still be paleo. The point is just to consume carbs which are in alignment with a paleo philosophy, such as tubers (potatoes), veggies, and fruits.

You find the most paleo folks among the crossfit crowd, rather then the body-building crowd.
I have never done crossfit but all of my paleo friends are into it.

Not right now...though if I did I would up my sweet potatoes or fruit. I am extremely active during each day as well but don't seem to crave carbs.
