What is the best non-manure bulk substrate?
    #18947080 - 10/07/13 09:49 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

I'm looking for the highest yielding non-manure substrate to spawn with rye. I've used coir in the past, as well as verm/peatmoss. I have access to most soil additives, but due to circumstance manure is not an option.

Also, would it be ideal to inject large amounts of LC directly into pressure cooked layers of that substrate? Trying to find a way to skip the jars and shorten overall grow time

Any recommendations or links in the right direction?

Thanks!

No.

Have you tried ordering poop/straw substrate online before? One of our sponsors here sells some really great poop substrate. It what I use for my mono's

Coir and verm works great and is super easy. What more could you ask for in a substrate

Ordering any substantial amount of substrate online is not really an option for my situation. Don't get me wrong, coir/verm has worked great
I was just wondering if there was something better.

Is there any way then to skip the Rye spawn step?

1) Use a different grain spawn.
2) Use PF tek.
3) Go hunting.

Why the hell would he use PF tek? PF tek is great for beginners and people that don't have enough sense to use proper sterile procedure. It doesn't hold a candle to the efficiency of growing bulk. Besides we weren't even talking anything about PF tek

I was just answering the question about skipping rye spawn.

Trying to cut corners in this hobby usually results in fail especially if you are a novice

Blue helix did LC to Bulk with Pans without an issue.  His substrate does have grain in it, however.  I've never felt the need to try it, but I've read a lot of his posts over the years to know not to doubt him.

OP is not Blue Helix and pan mycelium is crazy fast IME. The fact that OP needs to even ask if this can be done is a pretty strong case for him to not attempt it

I would say that linking to a tried and true method from a Trusted Cultivator that could be easily replicated with a Grain+CVG bag for cubes is a decent enough idea for somebody who wants to try it, when it is directly related to the questions somebody is asking.

:blowme:

Guys lets keep things civil  The first issue with the links you posted is the use of LC which IMO is a lot trickier to master than most people realize, I know I fucked up enough of them myself  If OP is a novice (and if he is already looking to cut corners with the grain spawn then I'm pretty sure he is) then the last thing he should be trying to do is mess with LC. That's the reason why most noobs are encouraged to start with pf tek; its a lot less easy to fuck up.

Thanks for the help everyone.

I'm interested in this long term so I'm just trying to figure out ways to make the process a bit more streamline. The Blue Helix log is actually similar to what i had in mind. Are they any others who have tried processes like this?

I plan on continuing to do spawn with coir for quite a while, but I'd like to experiment with other methods in the meantime.
