G2G Partially Colonized Jars
    #18947412 - 10/07/13 10:53 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Would it increase colonization speeds if I G2G another jar that is like 25% colonized, and then shake to distribute? My apologies if this has been covered before, I can not find a similar thread.

Thanks!
Sgt

We don't G2G partially colonized jars because full colonization shows more likely than not that your spawn isn't contaminated.  If your culture isn't going very fast and stuck around 25%, it is likely you have contamination, and G2Ging it would be a complete waste.  If you shake today, at 25% colonized, your jar should be done in 3 days or so anyways.  A few days isn't going to make or break your project.  Contaminated spawn will.

Can you G2G partially colonized jars.  Yes.
Is it recommended? Absolutely not.

If g2g has to be completely sterile then g2ging uncolonised spawn is okay.

I was reading back on my old posts, and I'm wondering why what I said was false?

I'm thinking this...

If you have jar 1, which is a 25% colonized jar with nothing but sterile grains and mushroom mycelium, what's wrong with transferring that jar to other sterilized grain jars? Assuming that jar 1 just contains sterile grain and mushroom mycelium and isn't 25% colonized due to stalling because of a contamination, what is wrong with doing that?

I know it's not the best way to do things, and I don't know why you would do it, but I don't see it causing any problems.

Theoretically, there would be no problems.  In practice, you're opening yourself up to a big clusterfuck.

It doesn't work this way.  Our grain 'sterilization' is never complete.  We have a short window to get the grains colonized.  If you G2G partially colonized grains, the uncolonized ones which transfer will be beyond their window before they get colonized with the second batch.

You can turn one grain jar into an 18 wheeler load of grain spawn in a few weeks using only fully colonized spawn.  I can't imagine needing to produce grain spawn faster than that.

If your jar is 25% then shake it and you'll have a full colonized jar in about 3 or 4 days
