ID request: Lepiota sp. in grass ...
    #18947201 - 10/07/13 10:15 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Habitat:
Found in exposed but rich & moist grass in suburban area.

Gills:
White

Stem:
~5-10cm long, 1-1.5cm diameter, equal or tapering upward somewhat.  Distinctive collarlike "hairy" ring.

Cap:
5-15cm diameter, white/off-white, smooth, broadly convex.

Spore print color:
I don't know; didn't take samples, just photographed it.

My guess is smooth parasol, i.e., Leucoagaricus (Lepiota) naucinus.

This is an Agaricus sp.

Did it stain yellow?

How does it smell if you crush the base?

Oh!  Ok, thanks.

I was thinking initially that it might be an Agaricus; the Lepiotas in general appear to have longer stalks than what I've got here.  What else tips it off as an Agaricus?  (Also wondering how you know it couldn't be an Amanita -- is it that an Amanita would typically have a volva or universal veil?)

I guess (from what I've read) I expected darker gills on an Agaricus.

Are you thinking it might be A. xanthodermus or maybe californicus?

Anyways, to partially answer your questions, I didn't see any yellow staining on any of them.  And some had been kicked over and smushed before I got to them -- these didn't have staining either.  I also didn't smell anything while handling it.  I may be able to get back to some specimens tomorrow and do some crushing and sniffing...

Yeah that is totally closer.

Byrain is right here and so are you. Agaricus would have pink gills in this young
age. Not white.

edit- and that annulus looks more leucoagaricus/chlorophyllum/lepiota as well.

Ok, so we're back to Lepiota naucina, a.k.a. Leucoagaricus leucothites.

Collective/guided mushroom identification -- what fun.  You guys are awesome!
