How long does it take to find Hallucinogenic Mushrooms?
    #18945984 - 10/07/13 05:59 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

I have been searching for the past 3 days now, each day I spent 5 hours searching. I have been through over 10 large pastures, and 5 large pastures with cows grazing, dung everywhere and fresh green grass.

The temperatures on average were 60 degrees up here in the west coast in Washington the past 3 days, and good rainfall amounts each night.

I was specifically looking for Liberty Caps, Stuntzii, Azurecens and Cyanescens.

I found countless, hundreds of species, but none seemed to match the description of any of the ones I was looking for, there was many many mushrooms in the cow pastures, especially growing near and around dung, but none of them looked anything like what I was looking for.

What should I be doing differently? I usually go out in the early morning about 8-10 A.M when it's still dewey out.

Took me 3 seasons to find Cyans.

I have the same question! I've been looking for years, first in Olympia (early 90s) and since '99 in Portland. It has been a long dry spell! Sometimes I think they're right in front of me and I'm just missing them somehow.

They have to be because they are in all of those places.

You must be doing it wrong then.

Just keep looking in woodchips and you WILL find them.

I can recall 2 large fields which had absolutely no mushrooms in them. They looked like an awesome pasture for mushroom growth, a lot of shady areas and high humidity. I spent about an hour in each one with no success.

Don't want to get that into it. When it's readily available in the wild.

I will definitely keep going out, I am determined and I don't really care how long it takes. I know the wait will be well worth it! It's fun anyway to search, even if you don't find anything you get out in the wild.

That's about how long it took for me too.

You could always grow mushrooms too.

Really I don't think it's a good idea for anyone to eat wild mushrooms that they harvest until they have a decent amount of experience identifying wild mushrooms of various genera. Experience makes it less likely that features of a mushroom will be overlooked or that they will be mistaken, for example the darkening of some Galerina stems for bluing(this has happened, with deadly consequences). So I think it's good for it to take at least 2 or 3 years to find any actives.

Get the book "Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World" by Stamets and Weil, that's a pretty good guide of what to look for when looking for psychoactives.

A trained eye is a huge advantage when trying to find mushrooms, and as with all things, practice makes perfect. The longer you do this, the more mushrooms you'll notice. Hunting for edibles is a great way to get that sort of training, and certainly less frustrating than starting out looking for Psilocybe spp. (which are fairly hard to spot as compared to, say, B. edulis or chanterelles).

That is very possible.  Once you know what they smell like, it's easier to find a general location.  I found two small patches today, in spots I would have never spent any energy on, except I smelled them.  I knew there was at least mycelium in the area, because of the smell.

Yup. Also, go after all mushrooms that you find and collect them and try
to ID them yourself. It will make the whole experience much more fun and
enlightening.

This.  You should approach the hobby holistically: get a locally focused guidebook, learn some common edibles and get used to identifying as much of what you can find, post IDs here and get feedback on your IDs.  Watch ID requests in the MH&I forum and the photo threads by other members with IDs and learn to identify mushrooms to genus in the common genera.  Study all the psychoactive species common to your area and their poisonous lookalikes.  In the course of your mushroom hunting career, you will eventually just stumble upon some psilocybe or other active species, if you've done your research, you will know exactly what they are when you find them and rejoice.  I found some completely accidentally while looking for edibles 1 year after I started the mushroom collecting hobby in earnest.  If you go out looking for actives arms with only a precursory knowledge, not only will you annoy the people on this forum with bad ID requests, you might endanger your own life with a poor ID and you will be looking for love in all the wrong places while you pass by a plethora of good edibles.

Mushroom hunters dont keep track of time in years, months, or days. Instead there are only seasons, hunts, and not hunts.

Liberty caps are the only mushroom you will find in fields
Not all fields will have liberty caps ...

You might need to look farther west... Also make sure you know what habitat is right for the mushrooms you are searching for...

Cyans are wood lover.... Give it about 2 weeks and they will be all over the place

Azures really grow in a limited area on the coast though some folks are trying to get them to grow inland.  Stuntzii are like where ever they wanna grow....

Ps... Fall mushrooms tend to like cooler weather

Two out of the Three stunzii patches I have found were on poorly kept lawns, but not poorly kept residential lawns.  Old commercial sod.  I saw cyans in old and new spots everywhere today.  The veils are just starting to break!

"How long does it take to find Hallucinogenic Mushrooms"?

2 years since starting this quest and I have yet to find a single active.:makesmecry: I am stumbling upon more and more types of different mushrooms however. My current plan is to search for them without actually searching haha. What I mean is look for non-actives and just take pictures.

Keep poking around the habitats and hope for the best.

Best of luck

It usually takes about 6 hours to drive to the spot, and 15 to 20 minutes to find them once you get there.

They will find you when you are ready.....stay slow and steady. Don't just glance....study the ground....the more you do this, the more you will be able to see them at a glance. Follow suggestions on where to look from here and mushroom observer. Don't fret....they will eventually find you.:mushroom2:

Found 100's of A. Muscaria today, which is what I was looking for to photograph.

Not a commonly sought active as they are not psilocybes, but the most photogenic for sure IMO.

I found hundreds in about 15 minutes of arriving in the woods I was searching, the largest patch/area I have ever seen, seems like an amazing year for them and many other species. (in the UK....)

I took several hundred pics in an hour or two, I'll make a post when I can be bothered to upload the nicer shots.

As for other actives, they are very fickle as others have said. They seem to choose their habitat at random. You can have 7-8 fields next to each other, same micro-climate, facing same direction, same animals in pasture and yet only find them in one field year after year after year.

It is a matter of honing in on perfect weather conditions and patience, and a lot of wet, cold feet!

Very rewarding when you suddenly stumble across several thousand Ps. Sem though, or find Ps. Cyans in a parking lot next to a main road.

Patience is key and photographing/hunting and ID'ing all species is relaxing and satisfying in it's own right.

Don't get discouraged. I found some my first time trying but I went with someone who had hunted before to an established cow pasture in FL at the right time of year. when I moved out here, I got gyms on the second time out and cyans on my third (on my own). It can happen quickly. For me it seems like the less I care if I find something, the more I find.

Went hunting for another 5 hours today, went to 3 pastures and 2 long woodsy/grassy trail areas. Spending an hour at each don't think I found any actives, but found some pretty cool ones.

Whoa! Those are some rad finds!

Anybody know what that 4th one is?

What was it growing off of OP?

I'm no TI but I believe #2 is a psychoactive (but not psychedelic) Amanita species. You can read up on them under mushroom info > hunting mushrooms > Amanita species, or searching the forums for Amanita Muscaria. Many really don't like their effects, but heating them a bit converts the nasty chemicals into more palatable ones, and if that's still not your cup of tea, you can cook them well and they're delicious (and not active anymore.) The key seems to be trying low dosages and working your way up slowly to find the level that's right for you.

Yeah I don't plan on eating anything unless I can 100% confirm it. & I found Pantherina EVERYWHERE in the woods where I live, 40% of the mushrooms I saw were Pantherina

You can see in the top of the picture there is a stem, it's the same mushroom.

Oh, sorry I don't have a pic of the stems their entire cap ran to the ground and their stems were not visible unless you tip them over which I didn't do. I also found a Liberty Cap, but it was old and didn't look very good.
