Is The Internet Ruining Our Social Skills? (My story)
    #18941910 - 10/06/13 07:13 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

So I've recently been wondering about what the effects of all this technology are going to be on kids nowadays. When I was a kid, the internet was still pretty new and it was very slow. So as a kid I always socialized. It wasn't until I was about 15-16 that I started using the internet heavily and then never stopped. My social skills just from this are for the most part f*cked. Imagine how kids will be when they're getting this technology at 3 or 4 years old? Will they ever have time to learn to socialize? Kind of weird thinking about how they will turn out.

Now to my story, last year I became homeless. At first I thought it would suck not having stable housing, etc. I had the most fun of my life! I lost almost all access to the internet. (I couchsurfed for a few weeks until getting an apartment.) So what did I do? I socialized instead to pass the time and just had fun at my friend's houses for the few weeks.

I have internet again now and am back to my normal anti-socialness.

Anyways, do you guys think the internet is ruining all of our social skills?

I think lazy people are ruining their own social skills and passing these misguided values to their worthless crotch-spawn.

All of the people I know seem pretty socially well adapted despite being a part of this information age. That being said I think some people take too many pointless pictures which sorts of takes away from the moment lol

As for myself I'm quite the weirdo but I think I'd be that way regardless of whether or not I spend a lot of time on the internet

you might wanna stay inside more but no, everybody uses the internet so I wouldn't say it ruins your skills. actually it makes it easier because it's like half of social skills is just...being there...

All I know is when I go out to dinner with my friends (all of us 25-30 yrs old)there is always at least one person if not more forever on their phone on FB or texting or whatever. Now I love the internet, but it'd be nice if sometimes people could pry themselves away for their digital devices for 1 hour to have dinner and socialize.

The structure of social media gives unimportant nobodies a chance to get the acknowledgement and validation they lack in life.
It's a pretty simple thing, that unintelligent people are perpetually glued to Facebook-machines, seeking out likes and what-have-you.

Long story short, stupid people will fall prey to the insipid side of the information age.

The amount of change we have had in the past century is exponentially greater than the rest of mans time on earth, which is pretty miniscule compared to how long the earth itself has been here. So yeah, stuff has and is changing

I have yet to see someone who hasn't had their personality or behavior at least slightly altered by their smartphone. The moment I saw my mother checking her emails at the table in a nice restaurant, I realized how insidious the ability to be constantly "plugged in" can be. My last relationship was in no small part ruined by my boyfriend's use of his iPhone. Between Grindr and texting old boyfriends, I had no chance.

I don't think people even realize what they are doing, checking their phones every minute - it is a habit they don't seem to be conscious of. I've known people who you can't even have a conversation with anymore because they are too involved in whatever is happening on their phones.

I'm no saint. I got bitched out for texting while watching a movie recently.

20 years ago, if you needed to know an obscure fact or how to perform a technical procedure, you'd have to wait until the library was open or call someone smarter than yourself. Now, if you can't google it within ten seconds, you're an idiot. Google is great, but I'm a little disturbed at how little information people are committing to memory these days.

I'm not being one of those "you kids today..." types. I do the same shit as people half my age. The difference is that I remember the time before the Internet, Google, iPhones, etc...

It's really weird being a part of the generation that was born early enough to live through the period before the huge leap in personal technologies.
I grew up with VCRs and SNES and shit, but around the time I was reaching my later teens, cellphones and 3D games and everyone having a computer (with fast internet!) was entirely normal.

I like to try to keep my reliance on smartphones and whatnot to a minimum. I don't Tweet, Facebook, Instagram, or any of that bullshit.
That said, smartphone is useful as fuck for work.

it's really just another tool like any other. the difference is in how it gets used.

it could either enhance or subtract from socialization.

Old sayings or not, I think the amount of time people spend in the physical presence of their friends is being replaced by texting, FB and Internet based socializing. I'm sure if the shroomery didn't exist, I would make more of an effort to meet and spend time with real people. No offense.

People behave or "act" as you put it exactly the same. While they may have new mediums for their behavior (the internet) the still do the same shit in the same quantities. Hence the saying.

For instance the automobile enables you to travel further distances, but ultimately what do you do when you get where you're going? Same shit you would've done if you had to walk.

Face to face communication and online communication are not equivalent. We didn't evolve to communicate in ways other than in-person. When you remove the ability to see the person you are speaking with and see their body language, you lose something. When you can't hear the tone of their voice, the way they pause between words, their inflections, you lose something more. There is something very unsatisfying about this mode of communication.

Actually people do change and do act differently, a little over a hundred years ago people in the wild west could have a dual in the street to settle their differences. Technology has changed the way people act regardless of whether you ignorant mind wants to accept it. To say people do not act differently from a few hundred and even more a few thousand years ago.

People used to have to kill their own meat and there were a time when we were all hunter gatherer people, cavemen, etc . . . The more advanced technology becomes the more we will change with it

Most definitely.  When I got to college I realized I had no idea how to socialize with new people, had no game with women, and couldn't make new friends before I ditched the Facebook, stopped trying to pick up chicks via text message, and learned the skills that fifty years ago 13-year-olds had.

Uncivilized people kill each other, and of course we still fuck genius. That is how we reproduce. You are now making yourself look like an ignorant fool AND a troll by arguing such a ludicrous point. Any intelligent Homo Sapien who has studied the course of human history can plainly see that we have been evolving and changing ever since we have been on this planet and we continue to do so. . .

Oh but I apologize for assuming that you were of the Homo Sapien decent, you are more likely one of these:

Depends on why you use the internet, is it a substitution for real world social interaction or a replacement.  I don't see as many kids outside playing as when I was younger and I find that troubling.  Next generation is going to be a bunch of pussies, though I'm sure our grandparents said that about most of us.

Nope, human nature has remained largely untouched, regardless of how well we speak and dress.
We are motivated by primal urges and still act on them to this day. You can get caught up believing that all of the fancy ways we have to make life easier have somehow changed our base nature, or you can be smart enough to see how we are still very much the same.
By the way, people who spend all of their time calling others ignorant are the sort of babbling retards who are too stupid to have much knowledge besides an intimate memory of the smell of their own asshole.

I never see kids doing the shit I did when I was a kid. Maybe the Internet has occupied their time, but I think in this particular case, it is the media sensationalization of every possible danger that a kid may face. Parents don't let their kids out of the house because they will be kidnapped and sold into slavery within seconds.

Kids need to get their fingers dirty. They need to occasionally get hurt. Thats how kids turn into adults. Sequestering them away into perfectly planned blocks of time is going to create high achieving social retards.

Well whatever it is its sad.  When I was a little kid everyone in my neighborhood would be outside everyday during the summer.  Its like now all these pricks are dicking around on their computers and playing video games.  What the hell is wrong with the parents?  My dad would tell me to get out of the house on nice days.

Are you telling me you do not believe in evolution and that we were "created" and that the earth is only a few thousand years old? lol

If you believe in evolution, which has solid evidence to back it up, and then say we havent changed that makes you a hypocrite and you are contradicting you own beliefs hahah

There was a time when you could dual out in the street without ant legal consequences whatsoever. That was not that long ago, just a drop ago in the lake of human history, believe what you want, but we are changing. It is unfortunate you are too close minded to see it, but that must be one of the drawbacks of having neanderthal DNA

I don't think he actually did claim that people have never changed at all. Instead he was claiming that human nature had not changed significantly through the period recorded in history.

Regardless, human nature HAS changed. OF course people still give in to primal urges here and there, but the majority of people do not go around killing one another to settle conflicts, the majority of people feel ashamed of their nakedness and put clothes on themselves, a lot of people are offended by people that are open about sex. All of these qualities were not always part of human nature so yes, it has changed with time

I know it is hard to tell with text but I thought it was pretty obvious I was exaggerating my point, and my whole point from the beginning relates to what the thread was originally about. People have changed greatly due to innovations and inventions, and the changing world around us. People are continuing to change with the advancement of technology.

And a few more examples of how human nature has changed:Money,Toilets

Paper money has added something to human nature that was no there before, and somewhere in human history people started becoming uncomfortable with shitting in front of people, and some people cant even talk about it without getting embarrassed. You think early humans worried about that?

And technology is still relatively new so we have not yet had the opportunity to fully see how it will change us

I thought it was pretty obvious from what sVs had said that he had placed some major qualifiers on his "human nature hasn't changed" claim, namely that major changes hadn't taken place over a limited time window. Obviously that point is arguable both ways, but the period he was talking about was pretty short in evolutionary terms. Your stance "You said that humans had never changed ever, so you must be either an evolution denier or a hypocrite" was basically a straw man argument, you were arguing against a point he hadn't really made and attributing it to him. When I pointed this out, your rebuttal was "Semantics," kind of a cop-out since your own argument relied heavily on semantics.

All depends on how you define "human nature" I suppose. Embarrassment and greed have been around for quite a while though, even if the things we get embarrassed or greedy about have changed. Human behavior has certainly changed a great deal, but that doesn't necessarily mean that our core motivations are totally different.

Nothing you just said takes away at all from the point I am trying to make, external factors change human beings and the interent is one of those external factors, and it is still a little too new to see exactly how it will change us. These changes take a long time to take effect but we are already starting to get a glimpse of what it is doing and the more technology advances the more we will see it

http://www.thestar.com/news/world/2013/10/08/commuters_preoccupied_with_smartphones_didnt_notice_killer_waving_gun.html
Quote:

Passengers on smartphones didn't notice man with gun before slaying

SAN FRANCISCO — Passengers on a crowded San Francisco commuter train were so absorbed in their phones and tablets they didn't notice the gunman until he randomly shot and killed a university student who had just exited the train, authorities said.

The man drew the gun several times on the train, with surveillance video showing him pointing it across the aisle without anyone noticing and then putting it back against his side, authorities said.

Before that moment, footage showed the man pull out the .45-caliber pistol and once wiped his nose with the hand holding the weapon, District Attorney George Gascon and Police Chief Greg Suhr said.

"On the surveillance video we have, everyone is looking at their cellphones and personal devices and nobody notices. I find that to be very concerning," said Gascon recently when announcing murder charges against Nikhom Thephakaysone in the Sept. 23 fatal shooting of Justin Valdez.

"It doesn't appear that anybody saw the gun when he actually took it out," Suhr told reporters when he announced that Thephakaysone was arrested the next day.

In the surveillance video, Thephakaysone is seen exiting halfway out of Muni train and then extending his arm out as if he had pulled out a gun, followed by the sound of one gunshot, said Alex Bastian, a spokesman for the DA's office.
