in my opinion, many people mistake the need for tact with lying.

good quality relationships should be based on respect and mutual understandings.

id like to hope if i told a friend, tactfully, i just wasnt down for hangs they could
respect that and wed leave the conversation with no hard feelings..

You answered your own question.

It's an attempt to make people happier.

you could make sure they know it's not a personal thing and that you'd look forward to hanging out with them in the future, seems pretty understandable to me

Sometimes the truth hurts or is uncomfortable.

I wish more people were open, secure, and understanding so we didn't feel pressure to lie. Even little things. I try to be honest 100% of the time unless I'm talking to cops....cause... Ya know.

Would it really hurt your friends feelings if you just said "hey man it was cool hangin, but I think I'm gonna take off. I'll talk to you soon". ?
