Alcohol and Tobacco? Seriously?
    #18928957 - 10/03/13 11:46 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

So I went to the Pub to ask some unrelated question, see what people think. Then at some point my deep contempt for alcohol and tobacco became a topic, and stuff escalated rather quickly.

I was wondering how people feel about it here, in the Well-being section. Am I the one being weird about this? Are drinking alcohol and smoking tobacco cigarettes the cool thing to do now? Did I miss a memo?

If a redneck tells you their hobbies are crystal meth and PCP, are you supposed to say good job, I'm impressed by your fine distinguished taste in molecules? To me the booze+smoke combination goes in the same direction, though perhaps not so far. Self-destructive, demeaning behavior of the hoi polloi. Nothing to be proud of.

Especially if I'm tripping, I'm in the zone, active, energized and fresh, I can connect with anybody, then I see drunk or half-drunk people with their dazed look and behavior, maybe smoking at the same time. Spewing out that disgusting stench, their breathing shallow and incomplete, that stuff is just an instant deal breaker for me. I am literally sad for them, in the same way I'd be sad to see 10 year olds drinking or shooting up. Since it's adults, I'm just deeply disappointed of their long term choices and think they're not the best people to hang with.

Am I the one with the problem here? I thought this was a shroom forum, and the shroom and other psychedelics would tell and show people some of these things. Many smokers I've spoken to have told me they wish they never started, so on some level they do know it's bad for them, it's just an involuntary need and habit that's now too hard to quit. Isn't alcohol in the same exact group? Idiotic substances and bad ideas? On a shroom forum I expected more to carry this train of thought.

The only problem I see you having is one helluva close mind.  But am I then close minded for thinking your close mindedness is a problem?

Anyway, these people are making their own choices.  If you don't like alcohol and tobacco, don't drink or smoke.  If you don't enjoy the company of people who drink and smoke, associate yourself with people you do enjoy spending time with.  People who drink and smoke probably don't enjoy your company anyway if you are morally offended with how they choose to spend their time.

i thought this was a shroom forum, and the shroom and other psychedelics would teach people to accept the way that others choose to live their life.

That's what I started from, and that's what I do in RL. Avoid, not associate with drinkers/smokers, precisely because I know it would lead to a bad time and much  on both ends.

I don't know, I just like simple solutions to things. Like if sugar is bad for ya, I for one don't buy, own and keep sugar in my house. Works great. Sends me exploring for honey, stevia, spices, strange new fruits etc. Since I don't drink it sends me exploring for state changers. Found awesome things that way. I guess my problem with mainstreamers who settle for alcohol, or smokers of tobacco, is that I perceive them as having stopped exploring. They found a mediocre, rather boring ineffective solution, and settled for it. Keep doing it. Draw others into it.

Now spelling this out I don't know if this problem is real or just imagined (in my head), but that's the general vibe I get.

There's probably a lot of frustration I'm carrying around, at the fact that we live in a non-psychedelic society, that most days are a struggle with boredom and poor design, the fact that the normal urban world is nothing like a psy festival, the regular buildings are not colorful and wavy like Hundertwasser or Gaudi architecture, and so on. And I think they could and would be, if we'd just meet for shrooms more than for booze.

Anyway typing out all this stuff tells me I probably do have issues of my own to deal with. Should spend more time finding like-minded individuals and doing my thing, rather than getting in the face of booze drinkers.

Most days in YOUR life it seems like.

The way you come off on the booze concept is seems like your on a high horse of morality.

If you want to talk "health wise", how about telling me your full diet, your exercise routines, ways of living etc.. and just let me single out something that "I" deem is unworthy and should not happen.

Try not to be a puritan on the other side of the scale. "oh fuck those drugs and the people that take them, my drug is the only real good drug" It sounds ridiculous.

Also, I read where you were mentioning cigarettes and if they knew if its bad for them. They know. Trust me, they know. They are just in denial or simply do not give a fuck.

You sound pretty young man. Don't be surprised at all if your view changes in the future. My views have changed quite a few times in my life time, usually for the better.

Yup. Everyone is just trying to have a good time and you're hating on what they like to do.

You're being a hypocrite.

At the end of a long hard day I want to drink a beer or a few, not take some shrooms or eat some acid.

Yea I haven't been able to trip because I've been so stressed. Alcohol and tobacco are what I fall back on when I cannot escape and need a short glimpse outside my work.

Yes, you missed a memo.
It said "Not everyone who does something you don't like doing is doing it because it's 'the cool thing to do'.
Some people actually make their own choices, and do things they like doing; things you don't like doing, or things you think other people think are "uncool", just because they like doing them. And that's fine."

The nigger statement was unnecessary, but i actually agreed with a lot of the stuff you said, Spacerific. In my eyes you're an extremest though.

I agree with this. It's none of your business what others do. Be grateful you have the privilege of knowing a better alternative; don't preach it though! no one likes people being told they're wrong, that's why Jehovah's Witnesses are the but of a lot of jokes.

I feel like the original post went over people's head ... the replies are targeted towards rephrasing of the original message in such a way that it change considerably and the question marks were ignored.

I don't drink alcohol or toke cigarettes (for me mapacho is in a different category than chem-soaked cigs so I won't say tobacco cause it can be very different) for similar reasons for which I do not stab myself with sharp implements. I feel pity for those who imbibe. If any of them reach out for help I'll throw down a rope ladder otherwise I tend to leave it alone. There's plenty retarded things I still do which I am working on. I try to surround myself with others on the path towards progressing health because it seems easier to do things together. We can share methods and stories

It's not much of a shroom related forum these days ... shrooms are a minority subject so I'd say don't expect certain behavior. If ya wanna talk health pm me :P

I've noticed, just had some trouble believing it I guess

With tobacco I agree there's some degrees of use there, it's one thing to take the time and attention to prep and smoke a pipe or a hookah, or to use jungle tobacco in various rituals, as opposed to mindlessly, desperately sucking on commercial cigarettes throughout the day, every day, compulsively. As people often do in say, the office smoking break.

Anyway it's probably best if I just keep my nose out of all that business, stfu about my personal disgust for it and just focus on my own green hobbies and things I like. To each their own.

I admit I have a bias against alcohol. I have had lots of negative effects with it, not only while I was drinking but also when I was not. Alcoholism is a really big problem in this country. I've had friends beaten up by drunks who were so inebriated they sought any excuse for a fight. After weekends the streets are laden with booze-puke. We can't have nice things because poeple get drunk and destroy/set fire to things. It's so in-grained into the culture that you're treated with contempt if you choose not to drink, even if you're respectful about it. Then there's the week-day zombies who only live for the weekend. The vast majority of people here start drinking young.

Of course there are also those who don't bother anyone with their drink.

I don't like tobacco smoke either. I hate when I can't have my windows open on a hot day because the room fills with smoke - my own home should be the one place I can escape from it. Like alcohol it just seems to be everywhere.

That's enough ranting. I never complain to people about what they choose to do in their own time because we're all finding our way through this life in our own unique way, but I don't have to agree with it. Plus, I'm not perfect either so people would have plenty to complain about me too. It's when their activities step on my privacy, safety and property that I can't tolerate it any longer.

Man, good thing you like the heroic substances you like and not anything else.  I mean, alcohol is the devil

Good thing 90% of America would think you're a fucking tool druggie.  Are you looking for a blowjob for not liking commonly abused substances?
