NYC MTA Subway NFC Fares
    #18939633 - 10/06/13 10:38 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

So apparently the MTA wants to introduce NFC to pay for your subway fare... What do you think? It would enable you  to touch your phone to the terminal on the turnstile and it would let you go though...
Pay for fare with phone (NFC)
You may choose only one

We have a SMS-payment in use here.. 2,2€/60min ticket, which is valid in the subway, trams, some buses, commuter trains(within Helsinki city) and one ferry.

Pretty handy IMO

How many millions of dollars will it cost to retrofit turnstiles to cater to a relatively small cadre of people with money who will use it and will it achieve enough even for them?  I say fuck no

They'll just raise subway fares to compensate for the cost of retrofitting the turnstyles.

Perhaps true, but if you could get people to go along, you could get rid of (most) metrocards, the machines for them, and the waste from them... You might be able to use the same "debit card" idea to stop people from buying tons of cards. Like prepay, then use the prepaid balance. Make the limit 30$ per transaction. Once one first transaction clears, up it to 50$ etc...

As to the cost, I don't know about you all, but if they exchanged ONE turnstile per station, and made everyone pay a one time fee of $20-$40, for the early adopters, I might bite... This would also reduce student metro card fraud... you could link the student to the student metrocard...

In additon, each NFC "chip reader" costs like $150 for a full built retailer credit card/NFC reader. If they came up with a contract for a bare bones type system, they could get something to work...

If each console costs 150$ (which you could likely get cheaper, in bulk) and there are 468 stations in the subway, the price comes out to a little over 70,000$. That is a lot of money, I concede, but bear with me. If 5,380,184 people travel each week day, the MTA makes 13,450,460$ a day.

The MTA already tried something like this in 2006, and then because of overwhelmingly positive response, they ran a pilot again in 2010. Why not institute the system used in (most) of Europe? You pay your fare with NFC voluntarily, but then people go and check if you paid... If you did, no big deal, but If you didn't, you get a ticket for say 100$. The honest people have nothing to fear. Those who jump turnstiles, can continue to do so, at the risk of the fine. Then you could remove some of the manned boxes for employees, and replace them with machines...

Zappa, where are you? You seem like a pretty good person...

$70 000?  Don't make me laugh.  Maybe for JUST the readers.  Then there's the network, the system, the installation.  I think it's a great idea, but don't fool yourself into thinking this is any less than a $10 million project.

I guess... But if my other calculations are correct, then where is the other 13 million dollars going to? Why are they keep raising prices, and yet the entire underground is dirty, smelly, and ALWAYS has some sort of problems?

Perhaps I am over eager, but I like the idea... pity the red tape will get in the way...

Take into consideration how many turn styles there are per station. Ever been to the PATH station at world trade or the subway station at Times Square or Union Square? There has be to literally thousands of turns styles that would have to be upgraded.

Larchmont NY.  There is no way they could retrofit that many turnstiles for that little money.  We're talking NYC here.  Nothing gets done at what it should cost.  It will run well into the millions and hoe could you do it at just one turnstile per station?

This is the same objection I have to on-line voting.  It disenfranchises the poor.  Who buys a Metrocard at a manned booth?  Everybody uses the machines.

Yeah, likely.  I was being conservative.  It could easily turn into a $100 million project.

True, but not all at once... just a pilot to start everything off... link that together with google wallet and isis, and other mobile wallets and you begin to shape  the MTA without metro cards...
