Gymnopilus luteus?
    #18939424 - 10/06/13 09:44 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Found these growing on a rotting log within 100 yards of the river. In southeast ohio. They unfortunately dried before I got a spore print.

Given the high annular ring zone,I would agree that those are G.luteus.

I found these Friday. I went back yesterday and looked to see if I could find more, nothing. I plan to go back Tuesday. Will be hunting a different area today. Just got into mushroom hunting this week, when I found a bright red amanita species in the woods, though I have no interest in amanita's.

I would call those luteus, or at least very promising they are.

Very good to hear. Think it wise to eat these three just to test the waters?

I would probably save them, how much do they weigh?

I haven't weighed them yet, they are drying still. Do people typically weigh before or after drying?
Anyone know a good dose? Im looking to start with a weak trip.
(I have tripped several times before, just want to take it slow to get to the dose I like, I like weak trips.)

I would say dry, gyms are pretty nasty and bitter tasting I heard.
Roughly 10% of what they weigh wet is what you will have in dry weight.
I can't really speak for dosage personally, I know you need a lot though I think around 10 grams dry.
I would recommend reading some trip reports if you can find any.

10g is probably the threshold. I like the bitterness, i add a tiny bit to my tea to give it some funk.

I didn't find any trip reports of this particular mushroom, but other Gymnopilus species. Some suggest much higher doses. One being 80g fresh. (so 8g dry if 10% is the equivalent.)

Im going to grind these three into a powder and add to either a tea or the lemon tek. Suggestions? maybe a combo of both? I know it probably wont be enough but there will be more to come. Im in no rush to trip.

From my experience, you'll need at least 15-30+ dried grams for a decent experience.

I would suggest making a tea and adding lemon and honey. Trying to scarf those down can be very difficult! :puke:

i make a tea with gyms. cut em up small add to water bring to boil for about 5 to 10 mins then simmer for bout 20-30 mins add a little ginger while simmering. Strain I like to add some nutmeg cinamin and some sugar or sugar substitute, and some honey. drink while warm taste better warm than cold. then can freeze for storage.

Alright thanks for the info. I doubt ill have more then a gram, so seems almost pointless to try it if you think ill need 15-30 dried. But I still plan on taking them lol, not worth trying to store at the moment. Hopefully I can find more there.
From what I have heard I should be looking for psilocybe ovoideocystidiata. A lot more potent, I have found a few that look like it, but none have an obvious greening to them. Im right in the prime area for those, but I believe they are out of season. Maybe ill get lucky, we have been having weird weather this year.
