id help. bolete
    #18938146 - 10/05/13 10:02 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Hay guys. I have yet to collect any bolete mushrooms until today. I know none are lethal but some are poisonous. I read that if it doesn't bruise blue when cut, doesn't have red pours and doesn't taste foul then its edible. Is this true? I found these in the pnw. can anyone help me identify which bolete this is specifically?

Reminds me of Boletus smithii, though it's kinda hard to see the color of the stipe with all that dirt.

With that slimy ring zone and the blue bruising of the stem, I'm more drawn towards Suillus caerulescens now, but let's wait what other people are saying.

I looked up Suillus caerulescens and I think you are right. The bluing of the stem is a distinct feature. mine isn't bluing anywhere else but the stem and it looks just like it. I'll wait to try it until we get some other opinions. Thank you very much for the help!

This website is so awesome:evil:

I would guess it is either Suillus caerulescens or Suillus imitatus.

It is likely edible too. It is also very likely that it is full of maggots.

Cool find.

The large one did have a few of maggots. But I have a few young ones. hoping they are mostly free of them. I read soaking in salt water for a few mins can draw them out. I'll try it with one and see if it works.
Thanks again you guys.
